It is a great time to be a distance track fan in Minnesota.

That is unless you are trying to beat Finnerty. That kid is amazing.

I hear the 800 was a dog fight. You needed to run a low 1:57 just to make finals. There was also a lot of boxing in. Apparently the second heat was even faster than the first heat with sames and plummer.

Boyd won his heat of the 200 with herold from north behind him and Kalimu from tartan. Overall there has been some crazy fast times

ok, looks like the meet software melted yesterday- the only day 1 results available are in class AA and are contained in the 'news agate' link on the mshsl.org boys and girls t&f pages.
Those are javascript pop-up pages that won't open from a link here, they can only be opened from within the mshsl site itself. So here it is copy/pasted, in it's entirety, in case you have difficulty locating things within their site-

What a great way to end the sesaon for the Mounds View 4x400. I don't know their exact time, but it was in the 3:18 range, breaking the school record. Thats a pretty big record too, Trent Riter, Drew Duncanson, Brian Pramann, and Chris Aune set it in 2000 at the State Meet.

Who really deserved it the most though was Levon Trainor. There was an article on him in the Pioneer Press on Friday. He has scored significant points for Mounds View at the True Team State Meet all four years, and if he wasn't slowed down by a torn ACL in the fall of 2003 and another knee problem at True Team Sections 2004, he could have been the State Champion in the 400 this year. He put so much into the program there, sacraficed for everybody, and its good to see him come out with a state title.

KenA55

Swenson a double winner at 400/1600; Calabrese wins the 800. New A state Meet records in the HJ and 4x100 for Brianna Polus and the DeLaSalle girls. Leah Kern double winner in the throws.

Wow, a another new MN all-time record for the Minnetonka girls in 9:03! State meet record for Alicia Rue in the PV. Brandeland repeats in the TJ. Yetzer finishes off her double with a 4:47 1600 win and Cheever takes second in what I'm guessing is a huge pr for her. Dorniden takes the 800 (new AA meet record) and Pollard the 200/400.

KenA55
06-11-2005, 07:05 PM
Eric Buss almost hits 48' to win the TJ, Plummer takes the 800 in a final that went slower for most than the prelims. The 1600- Finnerty did just what he needed to do to win (as he did yesterday), exactly as he said he'd race in this morning's star-trib article linked above. I thought maybe we'd get a new national best for an American-born freshman here- but what the race really needed, for that to happen, I think, was some established older sub-4:15 guys on that sort of pace and we didn't have that this season. Certainly a stellar double for Rob by any measure. Boyd takes the sprints, RBT the hurdles.

Isaac Anderson new A meet record in the 100. The Pine Island 4x800 edges out Perham, both sub-8, first A race where it could be said there were two sub-8 relays going at it, great efforts! Asfeld sweeps the hurdle events. Posusta sub-49 to win the 400 (and 200 as well), Bush takes the 800, Brandon the 1600, and Torchia the deuce as previously noted. Ted Rud owns the horizontal jumps. Annandale relays take two titles in the 4x2 & 4x4.

You have to take into account that seconds before the 800 final began there were huge gusts of wind and it started raining.

wow, what a day. First off, Go alexandria in the 4x800. No one expected them to even come close and my hats are off to them. Gessel's split was a 1:54.14, reported to me by Ben Wilson of Alex. That's just incredible. Also, awesome job by finnerty in the 1600 as he ran a heck of a race along with fadgen. Fadgen had to take it out as fast as he did or he wouldn't have been able to pull of his 4:17 again, I talked to him a little afterwards and he said that was his plan, so job well done to him. What amazed me the most was that finnerty didn't even look tired what so ever compared to fadgen and heath, so this kid obviously has some talent that will be able to make him one of the best in nation for his grade. Plummer ran a heck of a race, in the nasty conditions of rain and wind, although i had my mind set on Sames to win it (as his name is the same as mine).

I didn't care too much for the short races, but congrats to those who won.

A little suprised that Calabrese could not hold it together during the 1600 today. I certainly thought she would be more of a contender in that event.

Man, what a day. I still can't believe that we actually won the 4x800. I was going absolutely crazy when my anchor (Mitch Gesell), outkicked Zack Cory (Eden Prairie) to win by like a .5 second. It was our school record by about 3.5 seconds, and only our 2nd championship on the boys side in Alexandria history. Gesell went on to run a 48.5 split or so in the 4x400, which finished 2nd behind a great Mounds View team. That kid is honestly an animal, so anybody in the MIAC conference next year, look out.
(he's going to St. Johns)

I wanted to add on also that in my mind the 4x800 was the most exciting race all day. EP ran a great race and no matter what the result would've been it would've still been incredible on both sides. Congrats to Alex and EP

alexandria_distance
06-11-2005, 11:53 PM
Yeah, I agree with Warrior Runner. Eden Prairie ran a great race, and Zack Cory was lying on his back after the race was completed in lane 4 or 5, unbelievably exhausted (for obvious reasons). Whatever tension that was held between Alex and EP before today, I hope it was resolved, and I'd like to apologize too (Cory apologized to one of my teammates) for the big misunderstanding on dyestat between Zack Cory and I. He could beat my a*s anyday, because I wasn't the Alexandria runner that I posted about, Mitch Gesell was. But yeah, great day, congrulations to all of the state participants, and I'll certainly be back next year as a spectator to watch State 2006.

How about Minnetonka 9:03.80?!

Splits anyone? Hope they're going out to N. Carolina again this year, I wish they could get seeded in a heat that extends their talants to the utmost this year- but NON had announced awhile back that they'd be snubbing any of this weekend's action as far as seed times are concerned. That sucks- state meets are what they really ought to look at, that's where the athletes turn it all loose.

King Chrös
06-12-2005, 02:02 AM
The 4x800 was a pretty good race. I bet you were all surprised when bottom seeded Mounds View stuck with the leaders for the first leg. In case you don't know of him, Kevin Bradley is a freshman. He is the best freshman in Mounds View history, over Riter, Trainor...expect some big things.

Also, Mounds View's seed time was slow because that was the one event that section 4AA isn't completely dominant in. So besides not putting together a complete lineup, the anchor leg casually came in 7 seconds under his PB.

Humarrogance
06-12-2005, 11:33 AM
Looking at the 300h results from prelims... does anyone know what happened to Andrew Rice of Maple Grove? He ran a 39.75 at sections but obviously fell hard, running a 53.55. Can anyone explain what happened?

Also, does anyone know Joey Hiben (Waconia) and know whether he's going to become a decathlete? He can run 14.89 in the 110's and throw the shot 56+. Unless he lacks in other places, I'd say he'd be a great decathlete.

King Chrös
06-12-2005, 12:11 PM
Also, what was the deal with making the guy rerun the 300's alone? That has got to be the hardest thing to do, I would be really shocked if he made finals.

I heard that somebodies hurdle fell into his lane, and I assume that it was Donovan Duncan's because he was DQ'ed on the scorecard.

The 4x800 was an awesome race, by far the most memorable race I've ever participated in. I felt our team ran nearly as well as we could have, and we can't complain too much PRing by 5 seconds as a team to 7:55 (and still only getting 5th place!). That was quite a deep race, and it was very fun. Congratulations to all who participated.

The 4x400 I think our team could have ran better, we just had some bad luck. I got spiked big time at the 200m mark and almost fell down, as did the Armstrong runner who spiked me. It was definitely rough out there, which made it all the more exciting. Our team PRed in the 4x400 as well, just some bad luck so I can't complain really there either.

Overall it was a very fun meet, and much more successful for myself compared to last year. It was a great experience.

no one has said anything about that 4:51 yet but i was quite impressed i must say.

oh and in the aa girls open 8, i was surprised by heather dorninden, too. i didnt really think anyone but elizabeth could take molly lehman in that race...dorninden's got quite the kick i see - she seemed to come back from that 400 pretty well

i thought nikki's 400 was great, as well as the 4x8's. also, rob finnerty is the man, and, of course, elizabeth yetzer is amazing. cant wait to be part of it all next year....

WOW!!! an awesome year at state. Everyone ran great times and it was a blast to run against the best in Minnesota. It was a great experince. Props to the Alex 4x800m breaking a school record by 3 seconds and winning state. I was going nuts in the stands so was everyone from Alex. Great job Mounds View in 4x400m 3:18 is a great time. I love running in that race and the only thing that sucked was I got boxed in real bad and wasn't able to run my race. It was my own fault for being so stupid. We still wouldn't have beaten Mounds View, but i think it woulda been a little closer. I can't wait to watch you guys run next year i only wish i could be out there with you. See you at state 2006

has jamie cheever been that fast all year or......
no one has said anything about that 4:51 yet but i was quite impressed i must say.

I never see a whole lot of detailed results on the city schools until the sections and state, but she qualified out of her section in 5:19 and those results on raceberry give her a seed time of 4:52. So sometime earlier she quietly ran one heck of a race. But since most of us knew nothing about that on saturday, her 1600 has to be the surprise of that race, I agree. Jamie had to go into that race pretty excited about her prospects, knowing she'd already run within 6 sec or so of Elizabeth's state record, and seeing how hard Yetzer went after that 3200 record just the day before. In the back of her mind she had to know that there was a state championship that would fall her way possibly depending on how much Yetzer had left in the tank after friday's huge effort.

It's that time of year, people, to extend a hearty congrats out to all of our graduates, with some resounding applause for all of the exciting efforts over the course of your high school athletic careers, on the turf in the fall and in the t&f events in the spring. Wishing all of the best to all of you in all of your future endeavors, both athletic and otherwise. Thanks for all of the great stuff over the past few years!

KenA55
06-13-2005, 10:14 AM
The 100 meter question- we had 22 competitors in A under the A standard with a tailwind in friday's prelims, and the entire AA field under 11.30 into a headwind friday. AA times were considerably slower in the finals saturday, again against a headwind. The mshsl final results on that 100m race for the A boys still show just the prelims.

http://mshsl.org/mshsl/upload/MSHSL165952a%20boys%20final%20results.htm

Was no final run for some reason? Were friday's efforts handtimed due to the software meltdown, and then the Saturday stuff was FAT? In comparison, last year there were more the usual 6 prelim efforts under the standard, as opposed to 22 this year. I have to assume handtiming (friday) this year unless somebody who knows tells me different. It matters because Anderson has been given a new A record based on the friday prelim results, and I'm wondering how legit that is.

Yes, a state track meet team champ is a little bit like deciding who's the best team in ML baseball by who gets the most all-star selections and how they do in the all-star game. Except that state track entrants have to earn their way in, of course, the fans can't vote 'em in.

Relatively, the girls times at the state meet were more impressive than the guys'. Unless it has just been the weather conditions, the times have dropped off since like 99 or 2000. Just compare the 400, 800, and mile.

yeah the guys races have been kind of disappointing in terms of time, i mean they are still fun races to watch, but if your just looking at times and not seeing the races, they are fairly dissapointing times, even in the sprints this year, with boyd winning in fairly slow times, i mean only 1 person under 11, thats really too bad, but oh well, their were some bright spots, a HJ'er going 6'10, 4x400 under 320 for the 2nd straight year, and a 906 2 mile, overall though, i agree with running rube's statement

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that they got slower, it just looks like handtiming on friday, esp. class A, because they're so much faster on friday as a group than any other year. There are no finals reported in the results for them, just prelims.

I just want to start off by saying...
alexandria_distance Yeah, I agree with Warrior Runner. This is the greatest act of maturity I have ever seen on Dyestat, and I mean this in the best way possible. What i said earlier wasn't supposed to come off as it did, but I couldn't explain myself becuase my coaches warned me not to post and not to even look on dyestat. But of course i looked, but didn't dare post. Anyway, I want to put my two cents in here about the state meet. I would have to say that the 4x800 was hands down the most nerve racking and best race of the day. 200 left, 6 teams in it, 150, 3 teams in it, last 100, 2 teams. Even for me watching, it was insane, I really didn't think we had a shot at top three or four. But I give a lot of props to Mitch Gessel, he is, in my mind with Mike Finnerty, the best 800 guy in the state. I would have never ran as fast as I did and never broken our school record if it wasn't for his race. Thank you. I would also say, I wasn't just laying on the track, i would never do that if i didn't have to, I hate when girls do that, it's stupid, I actually passed out. I just remember falling down and then some guy holding my legs, i thought they were dragging me off the track. So yeah, that's what happened, i didn't mean to make it dramatic. Mad props to my guys as well, they have been the underdogs in my mind compared to years past. A freshman, sophmore, junior, and senior. I'm extremely proud of them and they'll be back next year and hopefully accomplish what i never could, my eight times at state, a state title. But yeah, in conclusion, Alexandria and ourselves we underdogs going in and came out very successful, great job Alex and great job everyone else who ran.

Zack, no need to exaggerate, you've only been to state 7 times.

Haha, you forget, I was on the roster for the Boys hockey team when they went to state in 2003 and played 45 seconds in a PK, it's short, but I was there and participated with the team at state, sections, and for a couple games throughout the season. So, that would make it eight.
