I bought a box of Fruit Loops for the sole purpose of acquiring a light-up saber spoon.
To what extent do you think marketing influences us? What is the difference in its affect on the "weak" versus "strong" mind?
Obviously, my spoon is material evidence of which mind I possess.
Light-saber spoon???!!!
OOOOOOOOOGAADDOOOOOOOOGAADOOOOOO!!!
Must... have... light... saber... spoon...
Must... have...

I bet ads, etc. only actually have an effect in <10% of sales. Usually you know whether you're going to get Pepsi or Coke or whatever you're buying, but every once in awhile somebody comes along who isn't sure which they want and then advertising might have an effect. That sentence was too long.

I've got no data to back it up, but I'd be willing to bet that it has a much stronger effect on the consumer than you (or most people) would think. Especially with small children, who then pester their parents to buy the latest sugar-filled cereal to get the toy inside.

I noticed that I was quoting some commercial the other day, but for the life of me could not remember the product. I couldn't remember whether it was for shampoo or a credit card company or something in between. That type of marketing definitely effects us, but they serve only as entertainment.
The Sonic commercials for example...I think they're some of the most clever commercials around AND they're low budget, which is just outstanding considering how popular Sonic is nowadays.. but I refuse to eat at Sonic, because I hate the service and I hate the food. Any amount of those commercials won't convince me to eat there. Like I said, they're just good entertainment.
Beer commercials are the same way. How many men do you know actually drink light beer all the time? But still, they're everyone's favorite commercials..
