Did anyone see that at the very end of the broadcast, where he takes a pretend swing with the bouquet of flowers? Too funny.
Glad they showed most of the HS miles.

Yeah ... but pretty good broadcast overall, by US standards. Nice job yesterday, by the way.

Pretty good coverage? Not in my book. What justification do they have for cutting out most of the world record in the 5K and the 3Ks races? Oh, I know, no American winners, right? Why show the entire boys' mile and not the girls'?
It may have been better than watching the meet on one of the networks, but still not good.
I cannot wait for Millrose. We'll sit there waiting for live television to be ready. And that is assuming they can get the track back together after the all-important 60s (check the 2006 edition where it tool an HOUR to reassemble the track).
Television coverage does track no favors, that's for sure.

Joe? They are never going to show a whole 5 or most of a whole 5K..or 3K
It takes too much time, to show a lot of 32 mins. of races. I know you understand this, just reinforcing something that will never change.
The only reason they showed much more of the boys race in my opinion, is:
It went out fast and there were no less than 4 different ultimate leaders
Girl's race? Out in outrageously slow 2:32 with Tauro on top the entire way
Just my views , I could easily be wrong.

I think you're totally right king. The boys race was just a better race, plain and simple. It's not even like Tauro ran outrageously fast. Plus the boys race had better known names than the girls.
but basically the only race that mattered was the men's mile, and we definitely all know why.

Agree. Girls race had no excitement in it. Boys - fast opening pace by Murdock (60.1 creates visions of 4:05 or better); Forys tring to create a gap in the middle; Centro makes a big early "kick" move (ala FLNE) and a nice last lap by Phillips FTW.

King, I am totally aware that there is no way they are showing an entire 5K or even a 3K. I mean what, 3K at less than 10 minutes for the whole thing, including intros? Big deal, what do they have to do, move on to the next action-packed poker or golf tournament in January? Even with an American woman blowing the American record away, they couldn't be bothered. Geez.
As far as the girl's vs boy's mile, do you really think they took the time to analyze which was the better race?

It is not an exaggeration; it took an hour. They used to have fewer problems since there were more meets there and they had more experience. Now it is a once a year thing. No matter - the the Garden sold the track to USATF so they don't have to deal anymore.

They don't show the full 5k and 3k because they are not as popular in the Usa and they take a lot of time. I wonder if they show the full races in Canada CBC broadcast or in BBC England? :)
Great race for Alan!
Early-Mid Jan 3:59 easy uncontested win
A week ago @ Armory, 3:56 dominating win
This weekend @ Boston, 3:55 dominating win
Millrose and possibly Tyson is coming up! I wonder about Usa Indoors? :)

your stupid to complain about the coverage like that.
i cant believe you dont understand why the boys mile was more than the girls...
sad facts
1) in general america doesnt like track and field
2) the only thing people remotely care about is sprints
3) america doesnt care about womens sports
the fatc that they had any coverage is better than nothing...

I'm STUPID for having an opinion that differs from yours? On the contrary, it's the only intelligent thing to do. Keep accepting the scraps that the media offers you and that's the only thing you'll get.

well what are you going to do?? Complaining to people on Dyestat isnt going to change anything, so as long as you sit there and do nothing you have to accept it.

How do you know I'm doing nothing? You don't have a clue what I might be doing outside of Dyestat, now do you? This is a place for opinions, last I looked, so expressed mine. If that bothers you, there is always the ignore feature.

I don't know about ordinary meets, but in europe they showed the olympic track events and indeed all events other than the field events occurring during track races/vice versa, uncut and complete. if you showed commercials at the same time as the races, as they are doing for soccer now in this country, commercial networks could in fact show much more, and that would make the zealots like us, the primary audience for non-olympic track, much happier. as for the financial issues, obviously track has a much smaller audience than idiotic things like gambling, pool, and so forth.

For those complaining....
you should have seen the broadcasts a couple years ago.
The coverage was very good for the standards that they have set previously. Of course it might not be up to the European TV standards, but I can't complain about 2 hours of track on TV.
Definately a step in the right direction.

I've been watching the broadcasts for a lot more than a couple years and I agree that they are better now on ESPN/cable than on the networks. That said, I will continue to push for better and better coverage, knowing that I am probably shoveling it against the tide.

Ditto, I didn't feel like a bunch of stuff was omitted, granted every sec of the meet wasn't covered...but that has never happened.

A couple people complaining isn't going to do anything. The TV networks want money, and that comes through viewers. Unfortunately, people are probably going to change the channel if they show a high school girl's distance race.

the people watching it are track fans, track fans are going to watch it (girls mile, mens mile, 60 hurdles) no matter what mostly. there is hardly any event that a random channel changer will want to watch. by extending the coverage from 2 hours to three hours I hardly doubt they would lose any viewers, or gain any by shortening it. just my guess.

If you take this attitude about everything, nothing will ever change. It's defeatist and it need not be that way.
With the small audiences for track and field, a few people voicing their opinion may be an important percentage. If these networks hear from the tiddlywinks fans they'll dump T&F since all they care about is audience size. A vocal audience, even one that complains, tells them someone is watching.

It's sad but true...they're going to show the events that more people are going to watch. Not many people want to watch a 15 minute long race on TV. To show all the events, they'd have to make the broadcast longer(obviously) and that would compete with the following program. Admittedly, I don't know what that was because I don't have easy access to at TV (gotta love military school), but if it was a show that had any kind of following you know they would be upset if their show got canceled for a track meet.

Well that may be true....but if they take your view track and field it might not even exist on TV as it would sink in ratings if they did that.
Ideally wed love to see it all....but like he said...most people dont want to watch a HS girls mile. Most people in this country (even those watching) dont know who Sara Hall is let alone someone like Tauro. With the exception of the track faithful who dont pay the bills. People on Places like dyestat and letsrun are not the norm of the people watching...most are uninformed...and because of that they are univested as well in certain races.

Ratings? Right now, T&F is NOWHERE in the ratings. You think they show this stuff because of the attraction of the ratings or because it's the leastt of a lot of bad ratings choices? What I am saying doesn't diminis the chances of T&F being on television. I am saying be more vocal about what you want to see. As long as broadcast companies hear from people, even about these very low rated shows, they will pay some attention. Without that, the stuff disappears altogether.
And BTW, while you are right about most people not caring about the girls' versus the boys' mile (true T&F fans should be interest in both, especially when you are watching an all-timer), you'd better be careful about the future. More and more, the second and third tier colleges and universities are dropping only mens' track and XC while womens' goes forward. Sad but true. (there was one the other day but I cannot recall which school it was).

ALAN WEBB. WILL HE BREAK 3:55 NEXT TIME OUT?
discuss.
(personally, I think he is crazy enough that he wants to go for the indoor record at Millrose versus Lagat. I hope I'm wrong, but I really don't see him being able to pull that off.)
