I swear, I can't get by more than a day without hearing about a high-speed car chase in California!!!! Do these happen anywhere else, or are they just a phenomenon of California?:p

Oh, there was a nice motorcycle chase the other day, quite a good rider, though not the greatest citizen apparently. Actually managed to get away from police by ditching the bike in a mall parking garage.
It gets better. Yesterday the California Highway Patrol got ahold of his cell number, called him, and he said the bike had been stolen, that it was not him on the bike going 130+. They told him to come down to the local CHP office to file the stolen vehicle report. He was actually stupid enough to do so, and once he signed it, the cuffs went on for filing a false police report. At the time of his arrest he was also found in possession of 2 suspended drivers licenses under false names.
And to answer your initial question, they do happen other places-anyone who has watched World's Wildest Police Videos knows that-but the intense media coverage is largely unique to California. I remember watching an episode of the since-cancelled show "It's Like, You Know" and they devoted an entire half-hour satirizing the media coverage of car chases in Los Angeles. The best part was when they called for take-out Chinese, and were told it would be three hours b/c of the car chase.
As for the choice of vehicles, no one ever said criminals were smart.

I loved that show, it's a shame they took it off the air. Oh well I just watch Yes, Dear now:)

I'd imagine in most chases the crime that they're running from has gone most awry and their plan didn't include flying down the highway at top speeds.
As far as high speed chases in California goes, maybe they're trying to get to Mexico? Lot of other states aren't near any such border and the chances of getting to sanctuary are slim. Although I don't recall hearing about as many car chases through Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas.
