Yeah I run the 400m Hurdles. Basically, when we practice we break the race up into two pieces: the first half and the second half. On Mondays we do 3 x 400m with the last four hurdles in place. We try to run the first 200m (in which there are no hurdles) relatively relaxed, like 30-32 seconds. Then we hammer the last 200m and try to hit our steps (15 coming home for me). The times will vary depending on that first 200m, but usually try to be under a minute. We do this workout in regular training shoes.
On Thursdays, we work on the steps over the first five hurdles. We set up the first five hurdles on their proper marks. We usually do one start to the first hurdle, then a couple to three hurdles and a couple to five hurdles. We always come out of blocks and always use spikes. The rest on these should be enough so that you certainly aren't breathing hard. We are always rested over the first five hurdles on race day, so we want to be rested in practice when we go over the first five hurdles.

thanks alot. That was really helpful. Whats ur time in it? and whats ur 400m time? My best is 50.3 in the open 4, and i did 60.0 for my first try in the IH. I know i can get my time down alot once i get practice at hurdles.

I ran 52.93 in the 400m hurdles in college. I never did the open 400m, but my best split was a 47.9 anchor leg (which was only 50 minutes after the 400m hurdles). My freshmen year, my best split was 50.3 and I ran 55.58 in the 400m hurdles.

i personally think the 400 ih is a lot of fun. I'm not amazing at the race, but I still do my best. My open 400 is about 57, and in the last duel meet i ran 58.5 in the 400 ih. I really hate the open 400, thats probably why that time is so slow

well i tried the 400ih on monday...aginst my own will...i had to learn how to hurdle right before the race and i didn't even have my trainers. i think it is an ok race though even though i have been sore for 3 days cuz of it...only way ill ever run that race again is if my coach makes me
i like 400m a lot more w/out hurdles in the way!

As a freshman in college this year, i ran a 54.16 and a 48.5 split on the relay at the University of Texas at Arlington Meet. last week was bad because of travel, and then i was the dreaded 10th qualifer when they only take the top nine at the Texas Relays. This week at Oklahoma i feel that i am ready to drop somthing big.
And one personal note, i think that as long as you are a strong fast runner, the 400 hurdles are a fun race.

Open- 50.3
Hurdles- 55.8
I love them both, maybe the 400mH a little more, because i feel special when not as many people can do it.

open:49.5
hurdles:52.89
it's a great race, either to run or watch. definately sucks the first few times running it(i dreaded it freshman year) but it's alot of fun. plus like fraek said, few can/will try it and it's one of the better-respected events

Nah, i can feel how many im doing, but i dont really think about it. i know how many steps im going to take before the race, and then i do it.... it takes a lot of practice.
Counting during a race will just slow you down.
