I am thinking of attending some cross country meets this coming season and I was wondering which meets are the biggest in terms of the number of teams/athletes participating. Anyone know which ones are the biggest and how many teams/athletes compete in them? Thanks.

The Crete-Monee Pow-Wow claims to be the world's biggest high school meet. I find it hard to believe that is true though. There are about 50 teams. 7 runners times 50 is 350. I know some of the Peoria invitationals have more than that.

No, I think Crete Pow-Wow is the largest race that is done by flights. And there were 45 teams there.

Don't they have a JV race at that meet? That would make more than 7 runners per team then.

edit: I get it, they do 1-7 runner against runner. Never mind.

No there is no JV at crete but York runs there JV team there because there A team is somewhere else. And flight means 7 runners run against other 7s then there is a 5 min gap then 6 runs then 1/2 hour break then it repeats.

It probbaly is that, but there aren't may meets done in flights, so does it really mean anything if they are the biggest?

Crete used to bill itself as the largest meet in the country. This meant that they had the most teams running at the same meet. They used to pull in 70 teams back when they didn't change the course every year or two. Also, there weren't that many meets on that particular weekend, so most teams just went there. I believe Lisle has a big invite and Niles West has gotten pretty big. Tinley Park Invite has 35 teams or so running in two different divisions based on enrollment.

The Peoria Notre Dame Invitational features 57 teams and is generally held on the third Saturday of September. Last year's meet - adding the JV, F/S, and Varsity races - had about 1200 runners on the men's side. A few of the many great teams there are Eureka, Palatine, Naperville North, Lyons, Glenbard South, Downers North, and Wheaton Warrenville South.

I've researched this a little more and it looks like there are a lot of huge invitationals in Peoria throughout the season. Also, it looks like the first weekend in October is loaded with big meets like the Crete-Monee and Peoria Central Invites.

Most competitive meet with top teams in state has to be Palatine Invitational. Teams include York, Palatine, Hersey, Prospect, Lyons, and this year Stevenson should be back I believe as no Jewish holidays, those teams all finished top 10 at state last year. Aditionally CLC is there and they have had some very good teams in the past.

as far as just # of teams, the Wauconda meet the second weekend of the season is huge. I think 40-50 teams were there last year. We just started going there recently, but the only respectable teams are wws and stevenson and maybe clc.
