thanks for posting those, exj. i may be out in N.M. this summer, so it was good to see a bit of what you saw.
(if i do go, i've GOT to mail a post card from "Truth or Consequences" ... what a great name for a town!)

FYI---There are more towns/cities of over 5,000 in New Mexico than in Massachusetts.
Just one of the things you pick up along the way.:D

EDIT
picked up incorrectly I must add it is counties not town/cities so that makes my point a non-point.
Thanks GeoK

Just mentioning T or C earned me a search of the trunk at the border patrol station on Interstate 25 coming out of Las Cruces. I wanted to go there probably for the same reason you're thinking of, that it's such a great name for a town. But apparently there's 30-35% unemployment and not much to do except for visiting Elephant Butte Lake rec. area.

If you're going to the same areas I went, I can give you some food recommendations.

Ex...did y'all do the TRAM?

We vacationed there back in '97 I believe and I think Albuquerque(sp?)had the highest tram in the US that led to a mountain top restaurant in the clouds.

I don't remember how high...but it was waaaaaayyyyy up there to be cruising on a wire, dude.

You could even wander off on the mountain and explore but you had to be careful because the cliff was unprotected...and real.

Your pics are nice...the ones I've seen so far.

No, I didn't go up towards Albuquerque or Santa Fe. I stayed in the southern part of the state. I figured rather than try to see all of NM in one week, I'll go back another time and spend time up north. Or maybe try my luck at Ruidoso.

Okay, maybe next time.

Here's what I was referring to and trust me it's worth it for the view alone.

It's the world's longest aerial tramway to the top of Sandia Peak.

Yeah I've been up that a couple different times in the 90's, our International had educator training seminars out in Albuquerque, Ohio State U ran them but conducted them out of a hotel there.

My son just returned from a long weekend there last weekend, mostly in/around Santa Fe I believe. He got to go for free because his future med school sends a group of 1st year grad students out there for a long weekend of alternative medicine experience with the Navajo, who conduct the world's largest pow-wow right then as well, which he got to see. Normally he'd do that next year but they extended him the opportunity this year as well because he's registered native american I suppose. Dad doesn't normally get to hear the full details of such an experience- just the truncated and somewhat monosyllabic question-response version- but he happened to be on the phone with the gf last night as I drove him north and I have to admit I was amazed at just how conversational he can instantly become given someone on the other end that he really wants to talk to! :D

Wowzer. I think I picked out next year's vacation area.

The tramway to the top also gets you to the ski slopes down the other side of the mountain, which is more gradual and tree-covered. If you ski and get there during that season.

I don't know what time I'll get them uploaded each night, but you should be able to use the same link for pictures from Pac 10's this weekend.

I went deep into the archives for that one. I always felt it was The Byrds' best album; "The Notorious Byrd Brothers"

Thanks, I might look it up. I have some of their more country-rock style later albums--Sweetheart of the Rodeo and Live at the Filmore 1969, which are good. But I have sort of neglected the (more properly classic) early stuff. Just another one of my character flaws!

Personal favorite: The Byrds' "Fifth Dimension" album,
with Eight Miles High, Mr. Spaceman (won't you please take me for a ride), and above all,
Hey Joe ....

(where you goin' ... with that gun... in your haa-and?)

I think that's neat, Ken.

They don't smoke the peace pipe do they? ;)

Are you also a registered indian...I thought you were a white dude.

Did you eat at the restaurant on Sandia?

I had no idea snow was on the other side.

I did stop and pick up that Fillmore set (along with some other treats; can't buy just one thing at Rasputin's) and listened to it on the way to Stanford yesterday.

Very very nice. Thanks for the tip.

good , glad you liked it. Sweetheart at the Rodeo is good too.

I haven't acted on the Notorious Byrd Brothers or Five miles high--they are expensive on the internet and haven't had the time to look around in the real world

Look forward to the new pics. I actually found both Notorious Byrd Brothers and the Fifth Dimension for $8.07 a piece on the internet the other day and ordered both. They still haven't arrived yet, though

Wolfgang's Vault is a pretty interesting place (where wineturtle got his graphic) (http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/). They have all sorts of classic concert recordings that you can stream-- I believe there is a Byrds concert or two on there. I listened to several Quicksilver Messenger Service concerts on there one weekend. It was a pretty interesting listening experience

It's an excellent site.

The last week's add-ons will keep me busy for a while:
Springsteen at Winterland from 1973
Renaissance from The Royal Albert Hall 1977
Miles at Fillmore West from 1971
Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson from The Bottom Line in 1977
and the Tommy Bolin/David Coverdale incarnation of Deep Purple.
