Two weeks ago I found out that I had a stress fracture in my foot. I know the standard recovery time is 4-6 weeks. But does anyone know how long it should take for the bone to start to calcify? I have heard that when the bone calicfies their should be a bump in the spot of the fracture. but is this only visible on an x-ray? and should I be able to feel it?
I am unsure exactly what caused my fracture. at the time the injury occured I had been doing training that was very standard for me, training I have been doing for the last two years without problem. is there any reason why the fracture should occur now? is it possible it is due to my new pair of spikes? and if so why would this happen.
thanks in advance for any help.

I just recovered from a foot stress fracture. I was out for four month, but I didn't even know I had a stress fracture until I finally got it x-rayed after over 3 months of sitting out.

Anyways, there should be a mass bone that sort of "envelopes" the stress fracture, which means it's healing. Mine wasn't visible outside of the x-ray.

As for cause, I believe it's just bad luck, since that seemed to be my case. At this particular time in your life that part of your foot just wasn't capable of dealing with the stress it was being put under, so it fractured. that was the explanation I was given by my physician's assistant. It has to do with your body growth, but that part of the foot not keeping up with the growth, so it's weaker than the rest of the foot.

Just make sure you stay off of it, or you'll be out for a very long time like me. Poolwork should be great for you, especially since we're coming into summer. And don't be fooled by there being no pain anymore. When you first reach the point of your foot being pain-free, it only means it's about 80% healed or so. Just go for x-rays so you can stay updated on the progress.

Hope that helped.

thanks that does help, besides pool workouts what have you been allowed to do to stay fit? I feel like the elliptical and the bike may put too much pressure on my foot so I try to stay away. and the pool can sometimes be tough to get too.
