backintheday

As many of you know - King99 has accepted the challenge to run the Richardson Family's Ocean City 5K on Sat Aug 4. This is a race with a special cause - to raise awareness of and money to fight auto-immune diseases such as those suffered by Elizabeth Richardson for the past seveal years.

So far - King99 has ~ $400 of pledges...but let's no stop there !! This will be no easy feat for the Kinger. He hasn't trained since short shorts were cool. Love him or hate him...his heart is in the right place on this one. So c'mon and make a pledge. To do so...PM me your name, email address and pledge amount.

Also, if you want to run the race - PFFlyer will post the entry form on NJRunners.com as soon as its available.

King...King...King....King...

My mom and I just got in a fight because she thinks I should be working 7 days a week instead of 6. I worked my ass of in high school so i wouldn't have to pay for college, and shes still saying that i need money for college. So like i said before, I wish i could, but my mom would kill me.

I'll try to sneak in some money if I can. :D

I always thought that program was redundant because I didn't think people who were in the top 20% of their school would want to go to Community College but I guess some people do use it. I'm not sure if I would have qualified or not. The cut was top 31 at my school and I was 36 last time I checked but I did about the same my 2nd semester where alot of my friends dropped off.

Scotty,,

Here is the deal:

Flight delayed by 2 hours+ from Ground stop at Newark for storms up and down coast.

So, we board our 5:20 PM at 7:10.

I say" so, are we leaving on this plane or not?"

Flight attendant "well sir, we cannot guarantee anything"

Kinger:" Well are we on the plane for 50 minutes, or and hour an 50?"

FA: "Undetermined"

So I get on, I have an aisle, and am okay, I kind of knew, we would not be up right away.

Flight is supposed to take off at 7:30

At 8:00 captain comes on, says, well folks we are obviously in holding, next update at 8:30, NOW I know we are not getting off ground until at least 9:00 or almost 2 hours sitting.

It starts, it is not a fear of flying or claustrophobia, it is NOT knowing how long, in a confined place, with no expectation of when? It is whacky how it happens.

I am okay when flying or moving, but wow is it rough while just sitting there.

Finally at 9:20, I am just about ready to do the Curley shuffle in the aisle, they say we are leaving at 9:45, immediately, all is well. It is knowing there is a start to the trip that ends it.

But, what a rough thing to have as a phobia. I never think anything at all now when someone says they have anxiety or panic attacks. This is only thing that gets to me like that.:D

No, see? They do not until you get airborne, or maybe after like 3 hours on a runway, it was horrible.

I think that if you sit for 2 hours period, you should be able to get picked up and quit!!

King -- I had a flight a few years back from Philly to San Francisco. After a 90-minute ground stop in Philly because of weather in SFO, we finally took off -- this is an absolutely packed 737-200. ok, close to a six-hour flight. we're finally about to land in San Francisco, we're maybe 1,000 feet up, the row of Milbrae hotels on our left. very windy, driving rain, we're all over the place. all of a sudden, we begin climbing and we get out of there

pilot comes on and says weather is too nasty, we're landing in Oakland. we fly across the bay, land in Oakland, pilot tells people they can call friends/relatives and let them know to head over and pick them up in Oakland.

then we sit on a remote section of tarmac for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, an hour, and the pilot finally comes on and says we don't have a gate. USAir, it turns out, has a reciprocal gate agreement with Alaska Air, but Alaska Air had all of its gates occupied with no flights heading out.

so the pilot tells us to call people who are meeting someone to tell them to head back to San Francisco. so all these people making this horrible drive through awful traffic in terrible weather from San Francisco to Oakland now have to turn around and head back

meanwhile, we have no fuel, and USAir has no contract with any fuel supplier at Oakland, so we wait until they sort that out and finally get some gas for the 6-mile flight to San Francisco.

finally, after two hours on the ground in Oakland, we fly about five minutes to San Francisco and land about 10 hours after we boarded the plane

I had about 10 bottles of water, a spare laptop battery, and a seat in First Class, so I didn't really care, but a lot of people were in full panic mode, demanding to be let off the airplane, screaming at the pilot, etc. ugly scene.

speaking of ugly scenes, how'd your run go today?

maybe that's why my GF was so pissy...last week she boarded a plane at 5:30pm for Vegas

We had a good experience with Eastwind a good 8 years ago.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastwind_Airlines

We flew from Philly to Orlando for my first ever cruise. Cheap airline; looked good. Everything worked out.

Coming home was the opposite. We get to orlando to find out that our flight is "delayed" well delayed really means they cancelled our flight and put us on another one four hours later. So we get close to boarding that when they anounce it would be another hour or so and we'd instead by flying to Greensboro, NC (of very little consequence to me then but I've been back twice since). We were shocked and had no idea what the reason for that was. They told us they'd sort it out when we got there. Ok we're eating at the food court in Greenboro waiting for them to figure stuff out. Their CEO or President or something gathers us for a meeting and announces that in the week we were on our cruise they lost their gates at Philly. They'd be taking us back to Trenton. Then taking us by van to Philly to pick up our cars. We eventually get into Trenton after midnight. And passing Bordentown on 295 never felt so bad. Knowing there was home but I wouldn't be there for another hour and a half or so. We made it home after one in the morning for a flight originally schedule to get into philly at 7:20.

apparently this is what we were involved in
Due to the short runway at Trenton-Mercer Airport, the airline served Philadelphia for a short time, but consolidated their flights back to Trenton, New Jersey in early 1999 when Delta Air Lines terminated their contract to handle ground services.

In a seperate incident I slept overnight in the Terminal C ticketing area of the Philly airport. I'll finish that one later

king99
07-13-2007, 06:46 AM
CG, you see? I can deal with delays, other stuff, my sissues are directly related to being in a confined space, for an undetermined amount of time, if I knew we would sit for 2 hours then "up" I am okay, the not knowing or lack of control, apparently triggers something.

Indeed for some I understand now how rough that can be.

Some folks have really been more than generous regarding this!!

About 800.00, more if I go under 30:00..which as most know should be easy ,but will not be for the King!!

With 20 days of potential fitness building to go..I need a lot of motivation, so feel free to donate to this worthy cause!!

king99
07-17-2007, 10:55 AM
Training would not quite be the right word.

More Excercising for the Kinger would be it.But I am a bit more fit than when I started this.

As a side note

I play hoops okay, and am pretty competitive even with younger players and play about 2-3 times a week.I still have major game..hahahaha;)

HOWEVER

When I get on treadmill or roads..hahah which I do not. my knees really hurt, minor calcium deposits and I can actually feel some deterioration on right one(knee).

So I am up to 22 minutes now of walking and running at 9 and change per mile pace for the running, which is frightening ,based on my overall fantastic leaping and three point shooting abilities.:D

BUT I have, 15 days left , I am also dieting slightly if there is such a thing , so I should be down about 12 pounds by race day, from my shot putter like weight now!!

My pledge is on hold until King finishes.

I don't want to see any stopping and walking and then running again. If that happens, my money goes to don danser so he can can buy detour signs, police tape and orange cones to make sure no one suffers fatal injuries running over a sidewalk at Holmdel.

One thing I NEVER pretend to be and I admire those that are, is to be fit, altho a different looking King from NON, is promised by 8/4 and that's at least semi good for my wife and other family members.

King99 is overrated.

My pledge is on hold until King finishes.

I don't want to see any stopping and walking and then running again. If that happens, my money goes to don danser so he can can buy detour signs, police tape and orange cones to make sure no one suffers fatal injuries running over a sidewalk at Holmdel.

No smiley faces or winks from me on this one. I am serious.

So, I guess expecting a Komen-like 800m surge about 2k into the race is out of the question? Maybe go by 1mile in 8:40 or so, then sub4 for the next 800m? Remember, you were a fast twitch guy back in the 70s!

Jim L, I tried to send you a PM, but your box is full.

After reading some comments on here and talkng to another, I may have scratch this now.

My apologies.

Two reasons after yesterday my knees both are swollen, left one really hurts and I never meant to make any kind of mockery out of this by walking etc. As I know of all people how folks train and race these, I did not mean to make light of it, by going through motions.

My only point in this, was to raise awareness and monies for a good cause led by a family I know from the sport.

King,

Everyone on here supports what you are doing, but we also see it as an great opportunity to poke some fun.

Don't worry about how your body feels, just compete on race day with your heart. that's what this is all about anyway.

Don't worry how long it takes to finish the race, just keep remembering why you are doing it and don't worry about how anyone will react to your time or how you look doing it. .

This is about Elizabeth Richardson. She won't care if you walk the whole way. But she will care that you care.

Get yourself to the starting line and do the best you can. That's all any runner can ever expect from themself. When you cross the line, you will feel such a huge amount of satisfaction.

Accomplishing a goal is a great feeling. Helping someone in the process is even sweeter.

Go get 'em King.

And remember, run with your heart. It can take your further than you think.

I can only speak for myself and say that the only way you will fail is by not toeing the line and giving it a ride. The gesture and awareness that you are raising goes far higher than a time or even the sport and for that I salute you. A lot of us are truly blessed in many ways that we take for granted and its great to see us rally around one of our own and give back like this.

dcsonic17
07-19-2007, 10:17 AM
King, if it makes you feel better I can come down and try to run. Guarantee you can still outrun me in a 5k(i've actually never ran a 5k, longest ever was a 1600 in HS). Now if you put some hay barriers out, I might just have some chance from instincts taking over, but still now.

Seriously though, the position you have put yourself in is for a great cause, and I myself admire you ro taking on this endeavor and bringing awareness and people together to raise money for the cause. As Teddy Roosevelt said, "Some men are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them".

Spoke to Kinger each of the last 2nights, and he is a bit anxious about the race. With 15 training days left, the old guy is improving, but still has a way to go. The realistic goal is not to finish in under 30min, but to complete the course without walking. I think our man can do it.

We all support you Kinger. I, for one, will make no more comments involving the clock. Get from start to finish without walking, and you're a winner!

Not sure how he would have filled the post against that loaded Lakers team way back when, though. Seems that Kinger is more of a beyond the arc type of guy.

For what its worth, saw the man Kinger in person today when he stopped by during his lunch hour on the way to another meeting...won't disclose his menu for lunch in full detail...lets just say he's eating thunder and crapping lightning.

Okay, as I sit down to my training table meal of Chicken breats, no skin, salad, low carb dressing, I am thinking that it is only 12 days to event day, notice for me I do not call it RACE DAY.

So really 11 days left.

I have to admit, while hardly being the picture of health, this has been a bit tougher than I thought.

The main problem is not the breathing as I thought it might be, but tightness of legs. Oh well. On we go., The good news is, this has probably been my overall healthiest month in a long time, ain;t saying much.

Would love to see an Eddie Baynes sighting, one of my favorites form the past and now!!

Pete Hess? Hope he is healthy.

no, up at Princeton Jon went through 3200 meters in about 9:12, but after he and MoK had traded laps for the first 6 or 7 laps, Mo had to step off the track and Jon understandably had a tough time bringing it home super fast. Ran around 14:28 or so if I remember correctly. It was a shame, they were trying to help each other to get a regional qualifier. Unluckily for Jon he was the first seed in the "slow" heat, so he was way out front after MoK stepped off. that was his last race of the season.

King: sorry I couldn't talk the other night bud...apologize...the new lady friend was over and we had plans that we had to rush out to after eating...didn't think you'd want a 2AM call back...that being said...

I joke a lot on here and I think we all have a lot of fun on here. We have great discussions, learn a lot from each other, give great exposure to kids, create networking opportunities for all of us...these NJ threads have been great for the NJ track community.

But this is the first event I have seen on here in the years I've read and posted on Dyestat, the first event that is something really remarkable and selfless. This has grown to something that is bringing back tons of people in support of one of our beloved families. King, you have put yourself dead in the middle of it and you need to be commended for your selfless, potentially humiliating :p (jk) efforts. If need be, I volunteer to help carry you on part of the course; hopefully a downhill section. Hopefully a rickshaw is available. This is a great thing for the Richardson family and therefore a great thing for the NJ track community. Everyone on here can benefit from seeing how charity can make everyone's lives a bit better. This and you have inspired me to be a bit more introspective. Kudos, brother.

Alright, that's enough...nothing but non-PC humor and worthless observations for another two years  Look forward to seeing everyone. I'll be wearing the tiger-print speedo and carrying the red cup, full of water.

Even if living by the "if it bleeds it leads" mantra...forget the feel good aspects of this story, just think about the possibilities stemming from King running a 5k. You may be nicknamed "Scoop" after this one. Bring a chopper...plus, is there gonna be that BBQ? There will be more interview possibilites all within a 50 foot range than any reporter could ever want. :p

Jim will be having fun at River to Sea this weekend.

Trust me, I'd be running in ocean city on sat. if I didn't already commit to river to sea. It's killing me not to be part of the greatest single running event involving a non-runner ever on n.j soil.

i plan to send a donation, maybe a dollar for each minute it takes king to finish. this way I can pull for him to completley bomb out so I can further support the cause financially. And don't think for a second that I'm kidding.

Better get to bed now. Race starts at 8:00am.

It's summer. It's the beach.

I am of the opinion that anyone that goes to bed before 2am Friday night/Saturday morning shouldn't have their time officially counted in the results.

I promise, that by this standard (other reasonable prerequisites can be assumed), my time will be eligible for official results.

I came dow a day early to get adjusted to below sea level!!

Scotty, got your PM, I will check into that.

But not until Sunday most likely.

Anyway thanks to all, for their support of the event and their generosity, funds came from many varying sources and it is appreciated.

Thanks again.

Ooh good my times would count because I don't think I've been to bed before 2 AM for a long time (at least a month).

Unfortunately I haven't gone to sleep after 2 for a long time. Work + running + sinus infection = Me being dead tired and having to wake up early. My sleep schedule's the complete opposite of what it should be. I wake up/ go to sleep early in the summer, and during the school year I won't have to go to sleep before 2 or wake up before 11 any day that I don't have a meet, depending on my work schedule.

Let's hope Kinger survived this morning, and was able to avoid walking at any point during the race.

I imagin ehe is enjoying a cool Gatorade right about now.:)

Scotty since you insist:

I was never running the whole way.,I realized that, weeks ago.

I really do not understand your obsession wth the run the whole thing stuff, but so be it.

I walked, about 3 -4 minutes more more than I wanted, it was wildly humid. Not that hot really I guess, about high 80's maybe more?

I ran about 26 of the minutes, more than I had run at all to date, of the way too long over 30+..37:05 I think, the humidity got to me early.

Might have gotten near your late weeks line of 33/34 mins..in better weather, we ever hear that before??:D

BITD was kind enough to keep me company.
What a great guy.

Curtis and Corey Nowitzke come in together

Lex Williams third

JR 4th

Dave Alfano 5th

There were 100 or so particpants

I might have nipped a couple of walkers(only, I would NOT call what I did, running, it would insult the runners) , but they went on different route.

This was a great event, such nice people.

I can embarass myself for a good cause any time, any year.

I think I will stick with this another month, and see how it goes, I lost quite a bit of weight(hard to tell I know) About 12-14 pounds during this.

My calves just get way too tight though, altho today I was not going to survive the humidity that well, one of the sure draw backs of Tread mill indooor AC running.

Oh well.

Great fun, back to hoops.!!

good job, king ... it's not about the time (thank god) ... it's about the $1,000+ you helped raise

Wait, so where do you fit in? In staying up late enough, but not racing, you only fulfilled one of the requirements! Tisk tisk. I know you were afraid of the kniger breathing down your neck but I think you coould have given him a run for his money.

haha, just kidding buddy! good to see you again

I went to bed at 5:30 yesterday. I'm going to the NYC half tomorrow only because I have to go to North Bergen tomorrow anyway to pick up my Arsenal Jersey before my flight to Paris leaves at 6ish. Then I'm driving back here where A1 picks us up at 2:30 I think. Gonna be hectic. I'm debating if I should sleep tonight or not. I've only driven at 5 AM once before and that was on 4 hours sleep because my dad had punched out my headlight when he ran into my car and we were planning on fixing it but I went to a Seton Hall reception at the stock exchange and they told me I could meet them at Seton Hall the next day at 6:30 to go ring the bell with them. So we came home and took an hour plus to put the headlight in so I could drive up there in the morning. Turnpike was beautiful at 5-6 on a Friday morning. So what should I do? I'm almost done packing but I have to transfer a bunch of stuff to my laptop (5 gigs of music using my 512 flash drive)

How does this make this thread?

Use good judgement, get 4 hours of sleep, then go.

78Champ has less and got to Ocean City.

Kinger,

Solid effort. Running 26 of the 37 minutes is not bad, especially in your first event in nearly 30yrs. Keep it up. You are actually a real runner now!:) Maybe a coupla 5ks for you this fall?

Contrary to what some probably thought, I actually am keeping this trotting going.

I went 25 minutes yesterday, my new plan because of road impact on my knees etc, is treadmill, altho I know many loathe it, 3 days a week, roads 3, one day off.

While somewhat embarrassing and humiliating, I feel better physically even though I play hoops, than I have in years.

Thank you for all the support on here from many.
