View Full Version : What can Webb run for 5k right now?

With his famous range, and the American mile record now (safely, I think) under his belt, I am reminded by the chatter on the boards of a certain famous distance coach who said that the 5k would be Webb's best distance. With Worlds still a ways away, I think his mileage is still pretty high up there.
What does everyone think Mr. Webb would throw down for a 5k right about now?

That was about what I was thinking, but I don't have as good an idea of how these really elite level times stack up, so I figured I'd throw it out there.

Right now he is in Mile shape, so I don't know how far his range extends, even though he can run very fast. If he trained for the 5000m specifically he'd get 13:05 atleast, and possibly the American record. As far as right now, I am not sure.
He ran 13:10 in late 2005, and a 27:34 10k in early 2006(a better performance than that 5k considering the date/distance, etc). His capability is far out there, I think he can break 13:00 if he trained the 5k in a few years. That may not be good enough to medal in an Olympics but if he runs 3:30 he can medal in the 1500m. I have to think about this more. :D

In 2005 he ran 13:10 late in the season, after running 3:48.92 early in the season. This year, he ran 3:46.91, so you'd think he'd be faster for 5k. But when he ran 13:10, that was when he was doing a lot of strength training and stuff, whereas now he is focused on speed and just the mile. I'd say about the same time, maybe 2 or 3 seconds faster.

Yea, this variability in his training, being more oriented torward middle distance now than before, is why I am not sure of his capabilities.
Ok, theoretically, if his training this year was the same as previous years, and there was no variation, I have a different prediction. I would predict 13:04, and would predict 12:57 if he was training for the 5000m.
I'm excite! :)

Right now I would say he could dip under 13 minutes.
If he trained for the 5k, I think he could go 12:55 or faster.

I like his chances at dipping under 13, and also, in the WC's not this year but in years to come if he chose to run the 5000 I believe with his speed at 1500 he'd have to be considered a threat to be top 5 and maybe even medal at WC's and the Olympics 5 years from now.

I wonder what he does in 2005. This year and next year he will be focused on the 1500m. I don't see him moving up to double in the 1500m/5000m in focus until much later.

QFE, maybe more than 2 or 3 seconds faster though, my guess would be 13:05. guessing this would be a lot easier if he was on his game in the 2 mile at Pre this year.

Not slower than 13:02. On a perfect trip, maybe 12:55.

currently i would say no faster than 13:10 on a good day. but in the future, with 5k training, he is well under 13.
if he was training for the 5k, i think he could dip right under 13 minutes, but you cant forget his 2 mile at pre classic, where he bonked at his only longer race this year, so i cant rightly say he would run too fast this season at 5k

QFE.
When he interviewed about that race, he said he was surprised at how miserable the 4 minute pace felt, even though its much slower than his 1-mile time. I'm guessing 3.1 miles at 4:15 would be difficult for him. His strength work enabled him to run the fast 10K and 5K, but now he is out of that phase.

I'm confused because in the interview on letsrun audiocast after the 2 miles race he says that he and his coach don't have an explanation for his subpar performance in that race. He said he wanted to get the American record I believe. This means he thought he was in shape to get something 8:10 or faster, and should be able to break 13:10 right now.
Not sure if his distance shape has decreased or he had some random troubles. Hopefully he runs another 3k/2m/5k race in the future so we can see what he can do.
He's got 13:10 in 5k, which is very fast. He's got 27:34 in 10k in his debut, which is American record for a debut 10k. He's got 8:11 in two miles which was the American record until recently. I don't know if he has ever run an outdoor 3000m race. Tilastopaja.net doesn't list any. I was in high school nearby him when we were in high school together and I don't remember him running a 3000m race, so I'll have to research it.
HAS ALAN WEBB EVER RUN AN OUTDOOR 3000M RACE???

In 2005, Webb ran the 3K at Pre. He ran 7:39.28
