Four Team USA Minnesota Runners Continue
Outdoor Track Season in Europe
Minneapolis - July 8, 2005 - Four Team USA Minnesota runners - Carrie Tollefson, Jenelle Deatherage, Katie McGregor and Luke Watson - are continuing their outdoor track season in Europe during July. The athletes are competing at meets in Spain, Sweden, Italy, Croatia, Great Britain and Belgium at distances that include the 1500, 3000 and 5000 meters.
Olympian Carrie Tollefson left for Europe at the end of June and is running both the 1500 and 5000 meters on the track. In her first competition in Padova, Italy, on July 1 with hot conditions, she won the 1500 meter race in 4:10 (she has a best in the 1500 of 4:06). Next up is the Borotalco Golden Gala in Rome on July 8 where she will run the 5000. Tollefson has a best of 15:04 in the 5000 meters and is looking to improve that mark at the meet in Rome, which is the second leg of the TDK Golden League 2005 series. Following the event in Rome, Tollefson will fly back to the Twin Cities for two weeks of training before returning to Europe to race in another series of meets.
Jenelle Deatherage is focusing on the 1500 meters during her time in Europe which began July 1 in Padova, Italy, where she ran 4:14 to place fourth. Her European tour will conclude on July 11 at a Grand Prix II meet in Zagreb, Croatia. Deatherage has a best of 4:07 in the 1500 and finished eighth in the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in June.
Team USA Minnesota's Katie McGregor, who won the 10,000 meters at the 2005 USA Outdoor Championships in Carson, Calif., will head for Europe later in July to begin her tune-up for the IAAF Track & Field World Championships. She will compete in the 5000 meters at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm on July 26. McGregor will then run the 10,000 on Aug. 6 at World's, which will be held in Helsinki, Finland, Aug. 6-14.
Luke Watson will begin his European campaign on July 16 in Cardiff, Wales, followed by meets in Liege and Heusden, Belgium, and concluding with meets in Soria and then Tenerife, Spain on July 30. He will compete in the 1500, 3000 and 5000 meter distances.
