Anyone ever had mono? What did you do, how long did you lay off running, how did it affect your running in the long term, etc.

One of my friends had it during xc, and he still ran races, but couldn't run verry well, and could hardly train. But he didn't ahve a very bad case of mono. It all depends on how bad your mono is. He's doing fine now, running better than ever, it took about four months for full recovery.

my friend's 3200m time worsened by 50-60 seconds from the previous year due to mono. but ive seen others miss whole seasons due to a mix of mono and other viruses and infections.

my friend's 3200m time dropped 50-60 seconds from the previous year due to mono. but ive seen others miss whole seasons due to a mix of mono and other viruses and infections.
I doubt that was due to mono. More like mild mono that didn't really hurt him, good training, and body maturity.

Ah, I see. I would delete my post, but I'm keeping it because I'm lazy and I like to look ignorant.

How easily is mono spread? I have some friends who have mono and I'm around them all the time. Should I be worried?

I got it my junior year of college...went from running about 27 flat for an 8k to really struggling to run mid 29s. Ended up having to take off almost the whole XC season that year and didn't start running well again until the following summer. I'm back to setting new PRs on a pretty regular basis now, but it sure was frustrating at the time. To answer the spreading question, it spreads really easily through saliva...if you think you have it, don't share drinks with anyone, because I know of at least a few people who have gotten it that way.

It all depends on how serious the case is. I was out on a couch for 2 weeks and didn't even think about running then I took another 3 weeks off so my spleen didn't explode.

I had it during the indoor season. Couldn't run or do exercise for about six weeks. Had to come back really, really slowly. I still feel it now four months later. Hard workouts take more of a toll on me, need to make sure I get enough sleep, etc. What I lost most is endurance, but that's understandable.

It knocked me out for several months. Close to a year later, I am still not fully over it. I get sick weekly b/c my immune system is still weakened from it.
