Okay so this Sunday I'm leaving for a 10 day cruise. I'm not planning on missing any training whatsoever. So, would running on a treadmill for those 10 days straight lead to any injuries? I'm running about 90 MPW right now, so it would be around 130 miles on the treadmill.

I'm in the same boat as you, but I'm not really stressed about it. I'm just gonna run like 35-45 min on the treadmill everyday just to keep my fitness intact. Its a vacation, you should enjoy it instead of worrying about how your going to cram in a 90 mile week. Its not everyday that u go on cruises (well at least not for me).

Check to see if they have a track on one of the decks. Should be a ~1/3 mile loop, probably wooden, and you'll have to dodge lots of people, but better than the Tmill.

Is there a good chance that I would get injured from running so much on a treadmill?

I got the iPod covered, dvd player is a good idea too. Thanks.

Yes.

It would be a better idea to just cut your losses on the fitness than try to keep gaining. You don't have to be in good shape for another 5-6 weeks anyway.

It's tough to do. The track on the cruise I was on was 1/10 mile, one lane, and full of people walking in pairs. I tried to get there early in the morning, but it was always closed. Treadmill is probably the way to go, unless your cruise has a halfway decent track.

do like 30-45 min of running a day, then do 60 minutes of easy biking or elipticaling

I agree

Dont run too much on the decks because it is often just steel and will kill your legs. My advice is to run for no more than 20 minutes on a treadmill or ship's track and use it as an opportunity to get your general fitness up. Do a good mix of Elliptical, Bike, core and weight workouts.

Last summer I ran 50-60 miles on a treadmill 'cause I was on a cruise. I didn't get injured and I didn't even feel sore at all. I don't see why you would even get injured??? Just make sure you find a treadmill that's set on miles so that you find your correct mile pace. I went on a treadmill the first day, set it on my usual pace per mile and it was really, really slow. Then I realized it was pace per kilometer. lol :D

Don't run on the track thing on the deck... it's so stupid. You're constantly dodging people and the time goes by really slow. And the turns are so tight. The treadmill is definitely the way to go.

Also... don't worry TOO much about reaching your whole 90mpw thing... enjoy your vacation!!!! Even 50 or 60mi for the week will keep you in great shape if that's all you can get in.

I did a 60 mile week last summer where 6 of the days where on the treadmill on the cruise and the last day was at home. It wasn't very fun. The only times it was okay was when I managed to get one of the treadmills with a TV in front, because the other ones you couldn't watch without breaking your neck, so I'd have to make up games like I was in a race or something to keep myself occupied. I never even thought of just cross training. I didn't get injured or anything, but running less mileage and just cross training sounds like the best idea to me, you don't risk injury and you stay in pretty good shape. For 10 days, if you run a good amount less and are cross training, you're certainly not going to lose any fitness, you may not gain fitness, but that's not a big deal at this point.

My ship had a 1/3 mile track around the 4th deck. it was all wood and was really wide on the sides, but got narrow at the ends. The turns were really easy too. Guess I just got lucky.

I wont let my parents take me on a cruise. I hate treadmills more than almost anything in this world

Try changing it up on the treadmill. Heres one workout I did:

2 Mile Warm up

Put incline on 10.0 and speed at whatever is hard but doable
Run 45 seconds, then grab handles and put your feet on the sides
Rest 30-45 Seconds
Jump back on and run another 45 secs
Repeat for 15-20 minutes.
Lower incline to 3-5
Do the same thing, but at a comfortable pace for another 15

2 mile cooldown

That takes care of one day :) It goes by pretty fast because it keeps changing.

you won't have to do all your mileage on the cruise ship, or on a tmill. i went on a cruise a while back and there were plenty of excursions where the ship docked for hours on end.. you can get off and run on the islands or where ever when it docks. take advantage of those spots b/c if your cruise ship is anything like the one i was on, the tmills are extra ****ty b/c there was a hot tub in the middle of the weight room. run a little around the cruise ship's deck too; not on it's "track," on the whole deck. just find the one that you can go around without running through masses of people, restaurants, etc then run that one when it's cooler out. (it will be very windy if the ship is moving!) my advice would be to take a recovery week and drop mileage a bit. also, switch it up with the tmill and the cruise ship's deck b/c they both have downsides. also, hit on any hot babes you can find  especially if they're running on the tmill next to you or just look extra fine

But does running on a treadmill for 10 days straight make it likely that I will get injured?

Not likely, the treadmill will mess up your a stride a little bit and it will make you hate running but it is a softer surface then concrete or the ship's steel track. I vote for running when the ship docks or do cross training in the meantime(biking, elliptical, swim).

So you won't go on a cruise just because you don't want to run on a treadmill? Thats kinda dumb.

All of you are probably going to call me stubborn, but if the treadmill will not get me injured, I don't see the problem of going 90 MPW liked I planned.

You'll never want to run again, ever, but besides that I'm sure you'll be fine.

Cross train by means of shark-wrestling.

If you really want to, go for the treadmill thing. You may want to drive a railroad spike through your skull, but it would be impressive. Hey, Magness did 110, so go for it!

Tell us how the whole 90mpw went when you get back. If you do at least 70 miles on dreadmill, + rep for you.

It is possible to become injured from training on the same surface over and over again, but for 10 days I don't think it will happen, especially if you vary things up a little.

The better question is whether you will be driven insane trying to do that many miles on a treadmill. Even with entertainment, after 4 miles I start to itch for a trail or some solid land/grass...

I did a 60 mile week on a treadmill in april. The treadmill was a very high quality one on a celebrity cruise ship. it had tv's built in and stuff. but even so, i wanted to put my mouth on a curb and have someone stomp on the back of my head at the end of the week.

Ultimatex, after seeing a bunch of your posts, I think it needs to be stressed that you are only a high schooler. With the intensity and quantity of training that you are burdening your body with, you could easily end up with long term problems due to improper growth. Running could be a sport that you'll love for decades more, and you wouldn't want to lose it due to long-term problems such as arthritis. I don't know if you're lying or not about the rigor of your training, but long-term health > fast junior times.

I don't know why anyone is saying that you will get hurt running on a treadmill, because it is the equivalent of running on a soft surface and I always felt that treadmills helped my form and kept me injury free.....but they are also boring as hell. I would try the half running/ half eliptical or bike thing. It will keep your fitness up and if you dont get the full 90 miles week in dont worry about it too much. Just keep your fitness up and you should be fine.
