Someone mentioned Saratoga was going to Oatlands Invite this weekend which seemed odd given that the big meet in VA appears to be Maymont where Midlothian, ER, Tatnall etc will all be. But looking at the early entries it appeared that Lake Braddock who was US#20 was in the field so perhaps that made some sense. But on the updated list they are missing so I'm not sure what is up with that.

Lake Braddock ran in Florida this weekend I think and I also beleive I saw that some of the races at Maymount were not sanctioned for NY.

Oatlands Girls 5k Varsity A:
1 Davidson, Hannah SR Saratoga Springs 18:04.96 148.3 148
2 Gay, Morgane SR Whitman 18:14.14 145.3 145
3 DiValentin, Lia JR Chantilly HS 18:26.24 141.3 141
4 Guotos, Cassie SO Saratoga Springs 18:37.36 137.5 138
5 Lee, Christina SO Potomac Falls Hi 18:51.15 132.9 133
6 Wijayaratne, Hirun SO Herndon High School 18:54.32 131.9 132
7 Karabinus, Ariel Osbourn Park Hig 19:00.16 129.9 130
8 Parkes, Presley Millbrook 19:00.56 129.8 130
9 Britto, Michelle JR Woodbridge XC 19:17.47 124.2 124
10 Parkes, Sullivan Millbrook 19:18.09 124.0 124

I admit the speedratings seem a little low given that old CR was 19:03 and it appears there were some talented VA/MD girls in the field. Apparently Karabinus is one of the top runners in Midlothian's state class and finished ahead of Lautzenheiser this season.

The only time Karbinus beat Kathleen Lautzenheiser was this seasons Great Meadows. Midlo will most likey put 3 before Karbinus at the state meet. A better indication would be the girl that took 3rd in the same race Divalentin from Chantilly also from the same class. Looking at the Oatland results, Midlo without Leia Lautzenheiser would be right with Saratoga maybe a little better. Midlo still isn't running their 5th runner with there varsity. The coach is running some seniors that have been with the team since their Fr year. He has a habit of not showing his hand or as golfers say sandbagging. I don't think he's fooling to many now. He's done things like showing up at state meet with old uniforms.

Have Lautzenheiser and Karbinus raced any other time this season?
I admit I don't follow the Southeast region much outside of top teams I was mostly just going by what Brandon Miles had posted about the strength of the VA girls in the field.

DiValentin (pictured above by Ted Plunkett) has yet to be defeated this season as she has also moved into the #1 ranking in AAA and a favorite for the state title in the classification. The Chantilly junior has already picked up wins at the Monroe Parker Invite and Judges Classic. A third win at Oatlands Invite would be a huge momentum boost to not only a state title run for DiValentin, but also looking further ahead to qualifying for Footlocker Nationals field with a win over such a strong field.

Osbourn Park sophomore Ariel Karabinus has already defeated the preseason #1 AAA ranked runner in Kathleen Lautzenheiser of Midlothian in a runner-up finish at the Great Meadow Invite and a win over DiValentin would certainly give her a legitimate claim for a #1 ranking in AAA. Karabinus has carried over her strong finish from the AAA State Outdoor 3200 meter race to this fall in cross country as she recorded a 18:38 5K personal best in her first race out at Great Meadow.

Both Sullivan and Wijayaratne (pictured above by Robert Weatherly) are often overlooked, while for distance reasons. Sullivan's accomplishments have been glanced over by many running for a Group A school, while Wijayaratne gets overshadowed with the many great runners in the Northern Region. However, the other runners in the Oatlands Invite will be foolish to sleep on either as both Sullivan and Wijayaratne have broken 19 minutes for 5K this season and will only add to a competitive individual battle. Wijayarante claimed the Virginia Tech Invite title three Saturdays ago, while Sullivan placed third at the Gettysburg Invite two weeks ago behind one of Pennsylvania's best in Kara Millhouse with a 5K time of 18:54.

No that the only time they have run against Karbinus. Last year Karbinus placed 14th at the AAA Va state meet Midlo placed 4 in front of her. Great Meadows is just to early in the year to judge Coach Morgan teams, I'm guessing that Karbinus just came in the season in better racing shape than most girls, I could be wrong, she might be much improved.

A better comparsion would be Hannallah from winston churchill(MD school) she was in both Great Meadows and Maymount. That is a different midlo at Maymount. The Midlo boys also ran better yesterday.

I'd guess it may be some of both but it looks like she is definitely much improved. In 2006 she was over a minute behind Lautzenheiser (who won the race) at Great Meadows. She had huge PRs during the spring track season it appears and dropped her 2mile PR by almost a minute and finished a strong 3rd in the large school class at the state meet.
