What is a good conversion? I've usually said 40 seconds, but what is the "official" conversion rate?

Well, you can convert the time into seconds. For a 3k time, you can divide it by 3000 and then multiply it by 3200, and then convert it back into minutes. For a 3200, just do it the other way around.

Just adding 40 seconds isn't always right because it depends on how fast the runner is going.

Yeah, but that will tell you what they got if they kept the same pace for the extra 200m, or visa versa. For example, say a guy running a 3200m ran the 3000m of his life with a 8:50, but ran the last 200m in 45s because he was just dead. He would have ran a 8:50 for a 3k, but a 9:35 for a 3200m ... but if he kept on his 3k pace, he would have gotten a 9:25.

I just can't remember if the "official" conversion was 34 seconds or 40 seconds, or somewhere between.

For reference, it was a 9:57 3k

don't know the conversion rate but http://run-down.com/statistics/calc.php puts it at a 10:40.

Does anyone know what an 8:56 3000m would equate to in a 3200m race?

A strait time conversion its 9:31.75 but I'd say because of the last 200 ~9:33 to 35

Around 9:07 you add 40 seconds exactly. Then for every 13 seconds away from that you add another second. For a 9:20 for example you would add 41 and for 8:54 you would add 39.

Edit: This is based on "scientific" conversions. Since it's a significantly longer distance, you have to assume your average pace would be slower. For example, 10:00 is 40 seconds per 200m (for 3k), but if the same runner were to run an equivalent 3200, it wouldn't be just another 40 seconds...he's be running marginally slower the whole time which adds up.

I've heard average pace per 200 + 1 second

If your using a 3000 time as a 3200 time for a state qual in Virginia the form says to multiply by 1.0737

it's quite clearly 200m, or 218m for the full 2-mile

seriously though, you add 200m of the pace you run the meat of the race in, like the part before you kick, you can add one or two seconds if you feel you run that much slower for that extra 200m.

when you run a 3k, wear a stop watch and run the extra 200m afterward to get a good idea
