Who were the top runners of the freshman class of the midwest this year?
Ben Silver is IL's best frosh, he ran just under 15:00 at Detweiler fairly early in the season.

a freshman was 2nd at Indiana State. I'd say that's probably the best performance. (Illinois guy probably #2 if we're talking NTN-MW, and maybe #2 in FLMW too)

i think there were a couple of OH freshman in the 15:40's or 30's earlier in the season

Frosh James Martin of Carroll High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana really came on at the end of the season. He shocked everyone by finishing 2nd at the Indiana State Meet.
It was a great performance in what may be considered a "down year" for individuals in Indiana by many.
He ran 15:38 during the season if memory serves me correctly.
Maybe we will find out more information this weekend. Martin is heading to Kenosha to run in the FootLocker race. Unsure at this point if he is running in the seeded race or the frosh/soph race.
BTW: He placed ninth overall in the boys championship race at NTN Midwest in a time of 15:41.

Zach Wills of Ohio ran a 15:32 to come in 4th at their state meet. He also ran i think a 15:29 earlier in the year, and he's definetely one of the top frosh

Ok, then he's #1 or 2 and ahead of the Illinois kid.
15:30ish at OH's course is like a 14:30ish at Detweiller. That's huge for a frosh.
And that 15:55ish at IN's state meet isn't much ahead of him, either. IN State ran about 25 seconds slower than OH state... very close between them.
Thanks for the info.

it was already pointed out that some kid(s) from Ohio (?) had more impressive performances than ben's 14:56. just as a teammate...that meet was EARLY, our second and third runners dropped 28 and 40ish seconds to the end of the season, so if silver HAD been healthy i woulda predicted 14:40-45 for him...which is solid.
ohh..and he JUST started real training again, like two days ago

Ben wasn't training hard either. The reason he got hurt was because he was barely running, maybe 10 mpw at most. I've noticed that many freshmen who dominated in middle school (he ran 4:47 and 2:10) think that they can do the same amount of training that they did in middle school, and still win.
What he did was that he tried to go out with the elite Il. runners, and his body couldn't do it. He just broke down. I don't know how he's training now, but he will be good when he start "real training."

James Martin from Indiana.
He finished within 25 seconds of Mike Fout at the Indiana State Meet. When you consider only 3 kids were able to do that at Footlocker (Derrick 7 seconds, Fernandez 19 seconds and Lowe 22 seconds), you get a sense of just how great James Martin ran that day.

who are you and what are you talking about? he was doing the training the rest of the varsity team was doing, not just sitting around during practice. until he got hurt, that was. in the summer he was doing around 50 mpw, during the season maybe 40-50 mpw (until he got hurt), not "10 mpw"....don't talk about things you don't understand.
(Incidentally, he's currently at 9:45 for the 3200 indoors, he started full training about two weeks into the season, still has to cut it down every once in awhile cause we've been on our 160m indoor track due to weather, and that gives him problems)
Zach wills went 916 at ohio districts in a 3200 the won regionals in 918 in very windy weather

wills is amazing. he took down the div I state champ in XC donny roys in that race. he went like 4:45 then 4:30 for the win.
Alex Johnson from Maple Grove, Minnesota, is pretty good, his pr for 5k is 16:36 and for mile 4:29, and 2-mile 9:50. He's got a future.

updated for Lukas Verzbicas. He might end up being the best RUNNER in the midwest, at this rate, having taken down Pawola and Shields recently, by large margins.
i was hesitant to join the bandwagon of a kid who races all out nearly every weekend over the summer and says running is secondary to his triathlons, but hey, he's winning.
should be interesting to see what kind of improvement rate he has though, considering hes already elite and has raced and trained since he was like 2 years old.

did you miss my edit? We were talking about wills LAST year on this thread, which means he is no longer in contention for the best freshman in the midwest seeing as how he is a SOPHOMORE.
