I know that everyone is busy/excited with Footlocker and the holidays around that corner but I got this off Illinoispreptoptimes.........anyone see this new rule that the great and powerful IHSA has put into effect?
3. Item VIII-D-4: Timing Devices
Add this section under the uniform section. Watches will not be allowed to be worn during competition in track & field and cross country.
Rationale:
There used to be a 10-minute limit to get from one event to the next event in Track & Field. They allowed watches so competitors could get to their event on time. This is no longer necessary. Equally important is the technology currently available in a watch. Today’s sports watches can be used for many things including use as a pacing device. When used in this manner it is an unfair advantage that competitor would have over others in that competition.
i just don't understand their logic.....

That is an odd rule. In my experience the timers always shouted out 400m splits on the track. In an 800 we got 200 and 600 splits too. And in cross someone usually yelled out the slits at each mile. Are people allowed to tell the runners what their splits are now? Beacuse that information can be used as a pacing tool as well. I never raced with a watch and I knew all my splits.
No! The IHSA bans all pacing devices and pacing itself. They have now decreed that every competitor must sprint all out for as long as possible and then try to make it to the finish without collapsing. As many do this already, they expect the transition to go smoothly.

only can you get splits at a mile mark any other place you given splits you could be DQed possibly

Not your fault. It's just I could believe them actually implementing that rule so no one could gain an "unfair advantage."

Next logical step is to go by alphabetical order. The first year, the first 25 alphabetical teams go. The next year the next 25 go, etcetera. This will save teams who are not sheduled to go to state the trouble of training.
It will be glorious!

In all seriousness isnt there a rule at track state that coaches are not allowed to be on the track or infield and also not allowed any contact with the athletes (ie no walkie takies or cellphone contact)?
My coach explained this one to me at a quad when my team mates and I were joking around with walkie talkies.
If one coach is giving 1.5mile splits to his guys (not calling out for all athletes), I could see the IHSA considering it a violation claiming an unfair advantage to that team because perhaps another team has a disabled coach who can't make it out to that part of the course to give them splits and advice.

How bout yelling it from the stands? DQ the whole field for hearing it?
The IHSA should just hand out ear plugs and blindfolds to all runners for gods sake if they don't want any them to be aided in any way.

that is a rule for all meets that you are not allowed to have any electronic device in competition areas. And yes coaches are not allowed to give splits at state

But... you do have a giant scoreboard you can see with the time on it. Maybe the IHSA should ban that too!

true, we need to take into account the stupid people who can't read the time right (lol to those who know), that is a competitive advantage.

One thing with the scoreboard time though is that in quite a few meets, the time is off.

finally the IHSA did something I like. Come on who needs watches for a race? Go all out and run your best you don't need a watch to tell you how you should run. Stop looking at you stupid little watch and race the competitors in the race!

You may not think it matters to have a watch in a race, but why is a rule against it necessary? If watches are allowed you don't have to use one if you don't want to.

really i mean if everyone is allowed to use one then it would be the same as everyone not using one. and if some people chose not to then thats thier choice

I personally can't stand wearing a watch in any facet of training, and in racing its kind of irrellevant cause don't you have the huge timer, or at least people yelling stuff out? I really don't think this'll make anyone win or lose a meet. The only way I could see this sucking would be at a dual meet when the other team sucks (NSC ftw) and you just want to do a workout or something, in that case it might be useful. But I don't think the IHSA goes around patrolling dual meets.

I think that is an idiotic rule, with absolutely no basis. Maybe make a rule that you can't program the watch to beep on a certain pace, etc. But to ban watches entirely? That's just idiotic. Most of the uniform rules are ridiculous though. There's no reason a kid shouldn't be able to wear a wristband in a race.

The beep rule is already in place.
Pretty bull**** rule, especially if they're going to enforce it in regular season meets where kids might want to know their splits at shorter intervals than their coach can get.

There already was a ban on any beeping and any pacing function other than stopwatch and time
