Sorry, I'm dumb and don't get the "15 lap" reference.

Don't feel dumb, the official didn't seem to mind that he only counted 15.

They made up for it though!!!!!!!!!

Today they made the boys 3200 run 17 laps. lol

My understanding of the boys small school 3200 yesterday was that some ran 15 laps (the first two "official" finishers), some ran 16 and, at least the leader, ran 17 laps. I'm not sure any iof the officials were counting laps.

And the girls race was 15 laps. that was correct.

I can say specifically what happened...the guy on the lap counter, as the leader passed each time, went from 9, to 9, to 7, to 6, to 6, to 3, to 1...those were the changes...my father (a SJ HOF coach and a very knowledgeable individual regarding distance events) showed up and hung out to see his son "do his thang"...he and I were watching the lap counter change during the 3200 (I had no entrants, so completely objective)...pitiful...I considered going up to them and explaining they were off before the end of the race, but figured it was the responsibility of the coach of the lead runner, and let it be...the winner in the girls race was in tears afterwards (she knew they were off and she was pissed) and the coach was furious...the officials of course accepted no responsibility...

I've now been to two meets at the Bennet Bubble and must say, after 16 years as a head coach, I've never seen worse meet management, both meets.

As a result, I looked at our winter schedule and finalized it today. I crossed off one Toms River meet and I'm up in the air about another...I'd rather drive the extra distance to 168th street and see them get it right.

Not just wrong, but completely arrogant about it. Pitiful. My athletes deserve better.

Why is it we have the most obnoxious officials of ANY sport in the NJSIAA? No other sport has this arrogance that I've seen, and I go to tons of events, always watching the officials and perplexed at their relative professionlism.

I had two girls make the final of the 55 dash...one girl was announced LITERALLY as everyone was already on the line...the 55 men's dash final preceded the women's 55 dash final...when the men's dash final was on the line I asked the officials when we were going to be notified of women's finalists, considering they were next...they said "don't worry about it"...I responded with "but they're on the track after this 7 SECOND RACE"...I knew my first girl made it and told her to go...the second got approximately 90 seconds of notice before the gun went off. No exaggeration.

Those are the jersey shore officials for ya. And to think, would that have been that girls first sub 12? She should have just kept running, thats crazy. To think...officially win a screwed up race or run a pr? I would have loved to see Higgs in that race last year, we'd have a new NR

I didn't see the 3200 myself as I had taken some girls to a different meet, but some of my runners ran 17 laps instead... so how they managed to subtract laps and add laps at the same time is amazing... In a meet last weekend, the counting was messed up in the 4x800 as well. Now that I have to put a little blame on the runners for as well, but still... I've just started telling my runners to count their own laps and finish when they know they're finished.

Last year TCNJ was at the bubble for the NJAC conference champs and had the same problems. The coaches were told by the officials that they had to count their own laps (the officials claimed that they were not responsible for the counting of laps). There were other problems with the meet, but I was hoping that it was just a first year - working out the kinks kind of thing.

For the record, I was not at the Merli meet and don't know if it was the same official crew as the NJAC.

Kempton had run 11:04 indoors before(06 indoor MOC), so no it wouldn't have been her first sub 12. However, both 2 miles were debacles. It seems like they fixed the boys 2 mile times, but the girls results are still skewed

I don't know who the crew was, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same... I was in the meet... I ran the 1600 for the girls DMR, there were only two teams, mine and TCNJ. I think TCNJ was done before I even started, but that's besides the point. I still had a lap to go and the official was trying to tell me I was done, so I had to tell the guy no, and he did not seem pleased that I ignored him and kept running, but there was no way I was stopping and risking losing the 8 points for my team.

The Small School 3200 was interesting. It appears first 6 or so boys ran 17 laps, a few of the coaches came together to figure out the results from us watching the races and timing our kids. Unfortunately the girls race they made up for the boys by having them run 15 laps.

They had to do that...to keep the meet running on schedule.

Got to love the early season optimism of coaches! Only 3 of 36 girls in the 200 ran faster than their seed time and you could do the same for each seeded event. Kind of like how each MLB team in April think they are going to the World Series!:)

Well, when I'm required to seed all my girls in about 10 seconds, most of whom have not yet run a meet yet this year, that kind of thing happens. Can't speak for others, but will speak for myself. Had to do them all in an instant (along with a ton of other ticked off coaches) because of the way the seeding went down. (You'll see in the following explanation)

I also wouldn't trust that all the seed times you are seeing were actually the ones submitted by the coaches. Seed times submitted that day were often lost, not on the seed sheet, or incorrect. I spent the day at the check in table having to check seed sheets for every race to try and get them to fix them. I spent the day being told this was all my fault.

The situation was this: The entry said to submit a Hytek roster. We did. The entry had something vague about seed times for the meet, but did NOT say they had to be submitted with the Hytek roster. We emailed them to ask about this and got no response. Since it's one of the first couple meets of the year, they must be having us seed on cards at the meet, right? Wrong. About 50% of the coaches (and almost all outside the shore area) did not do this because it was so vague. They blamed us all day, saying this and everything else was our fault. I was told once"well, the Shore Coaches got it right". I spoke with two Shore coaches and both said the only reason they knew is because when they went to practice at the bubble, the meet director asked them why their Hytek was sent without seed times.

It's this simple: if almost everyone didn't realize what they wanted, who is at fault for the communication problem? If they didn't respond to our email, who is at fault for the communication problem?

All day long they made it clear we were.

Sorry, but if I give directions to 20 friends to a restaurant, and only 10 find their way, I gave crappy driving directions...

So essentially they wanted us to list what event each kid is running, with a seed time, in a December meet, on the entry a week or so ahead of time. Oh, and we were supposed to read their minds about the vague statement they made, since they didn't respond to emails about this.

Really?

Now they aren't even supposed to be responsible for counting laps. Cool.

How many world records were set at this meet? If the athletes and coaches are responsible for lap counting, every event more than 1 lap should have been a world record.

Great point.

Good, because unless they are running a 5K, they don't have to count past 16. (Learned that in public school.)

But thanks for not posting that anyway. ;)

There are many paths and many of them lead to the same place. It's the dead ends you want to watch out for but it sure is hard to tell one from the other when you're on the way.
