is it harder than running in normal weather. I notice that when i run in the cold, its seems harder to breath and my calf area gets cramped up a little. Im trying to go base pace, but it is hard to get up to, when i try to, i start to breath harder and so on. Is this happening for anyone else? And is this affecting anyones base phase?

it happens to almost everyone...
the cold makes your muscles cramp up naturally. That is why it is not recomened to ice before a race

Running with my teammates/buddies helps me. Makes it easier for me to be motivated to go out in the cold and pound out a run when i know someone is gonna do it with me.

Dress appropriately. I've been running in everything from +110 to -40 and it's all about having the right equipment. If you're having trouble breathing, get a neck warmer or balaclava - it keeps a warmer pocket of air in front of your face so you aren't sucking in the cold stuff. Get a pair of wind briefs (or anything with a front panel to protect the family jewels). Wear spandex and running pants. You shouldn't be comfortably warm when you start the run or you'll overheat. You should dress to be warm 5 minutes after you start running!

Does anyone know if running outside in sub 20 degree temperatures for long distances is actually bad for your lungs?

usually i warm up a little longer on cold runs and i feel that it helps with the tightening of the calve muscles. and i agree with a post above me, it's all about the gear you use.

edit: post on first page, there is no post above.

Dont do that, feet get wet way easier that way, if you're running in like 0-20 (that's what it's like for us Mainer's anyway) degree weather it's way easier to get frostbite when you have wet feet because the snow melts in your shoes. Always wear well insulated shoes during the winter outside. I know it sounds a little far fetched to get frostbite but, it would be stupid to risk it. Just have good insulation and you'll be fine though.

no such thing as dumb questions, just dump people. anyways i agree with the post above. I actually know someone who got pretty bad frostbite like that. also before doing a good workout in them, make sure you break'em in, i speak from experience. My team and i decided to break in our shoes the same day, little did we know that our coach had a good workout planned for us instead of a lite day, so at the end our feet were thrashed.

coming from a kid who had to stop on a long run because he started have seizures from the cold even though we were all averaging under 7 minute pace for 14 miles.
