Since I'm from Massachusetts, I've never heard of a California Start. My New York teammates began describing one to me, but they couldn't agree on which of the start-types is the actual California Start.

Please enlighten me and pwn some of my teammates, NY Dyestat.

pretty sure the second one is both waterfall AND california (just different names)

the first one is just curved line start or anything you want to call it.

2 turn cut in?

What is shown is a one-turn cut-in; a two-turn cut-in would be at the beginning of the homestretch (usually it's the 100m start line) as you come out of the second turn.

Just one person's observations.

the official term for this kind of start is alley start

it is usually two or three alleys depending on the size of the track and field. it is a one turn stagger. the idea is to allow the runners time to settle before all cutting in.

it is the worst thing ever. the outside will always cut off the fast runners on the inside and it causes even more problems then waterfalls.

thats why a lot of big meets put the top seeds in the outside lanes. it works a lot better

i was originally from mass., where its called a 'barrel' and then moved to nj and they call it 'california' and i thought it was so weird at first

I haven't ever heard it called a California start. In Section V we always called it a "Box start". Inside box starts at the normal line, outside box starts on a line parallel with the 400m start line of the 5th lane. Cut in is after the second turn.

Or, if indoors, Outside Box starts on a line parallel with the 200m start line of lane 4, still a two turn cut in.

2nd is "cali box" and just cuz your not from cali doesnt mean you shouldnt knwo what this is.

and last years outdoor state meet 800, all of the guys in the outside box were DQ'ed because they cut in to early after the gun. soo there went half the field of eligable runners.

Yes... cutting in after the first turn of a two-turn stagger is now known as a "New York Start".

I can still remember BRD saying "W-T-F?" about 350 meters into his race, still well behind most of the offenders.

I'm still pissed about that race. I will never get over it. :(

yeah......what happened to BRD?

In the Division 1 heat of the 800 at states the people who started on the outside cut in after one turn instead of two turns (mixture of blame on both athletes and officials). At the cut in BRD was in 4th or something because they ran so much less.
Then that 1/2 of the field was DQd

OKAY!!!!!! I'M SICK OF THIS THREAD. THE ONE WITH TWO SEPERATE LINES IS KNOWN AS THE CALIFORNIA BOX START. THE ONE SHAPED LIKE AN ARC IS THE WATERFALL START. IT HELPS TO REMEMBER EACH OF THEM WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE START OF BOTH. THE BOX START IS A START WHERE TWO SEPERATE GROUPS OR "BOXES" ARE PUT ON THE TRACK AND THERE IS A DESIGNATED CUT IN. THE WATERFALL START HAPPENS EXACTLY LIKE A WATERFALL. IMMEDIATELY THE RUNNERS TRICKLE DOWN OR "FLOW" (AS IN THE GENERAL SHAPE OF THE RUNNERS AS A PACK) TOWARDS THE FIRST LANE. AND I SHOULD KNOW THIS AS I WAS FORCED TO DEAL WITH THE FACT THAT I WAS IN THE NEW YORK STATE DQ INCIDENT IN THE 800M.

SO NOW THIS ISSUE IS SETTLED AND THIS THREAD CAN BE DELETED.

okay so i'm not finished yet. :p i don't know about other events (i think they're all the same) but i know that for the 800, the cut in is actually on the other side of the track near the 100m dash start. The immediate cut-in out of the initial turn is only for a lane start. This cut-in also draws controversy with a few coaches and athletes who are forced to deal with a screwy start. A few of the lower seeds are always forced in the outside box and not only that, they are forced to run 300m with only half the race and meet up with a "different" race going into the last lap. It's not a good starting set-up and I wish that as competition gets to a higher level either go to the waterfall, or, like professionals and collegiate racing, use a lane start.
