fantastic article. its hard to believe all of that was printed in SI considering nowadays, running gets practically no ink

That is really the truth. Jim has trouble getting full articles in a newspaper, nevermind a national weekly magazine.
Go to the elite board and check the links I put out there in the SI Pre Issue thread. Fantastic old articles from SI on track. Hard to believe.

haahah, knobby knees...no- I didn’t expect that- but I DID expect him to be 8 feet tall with legs like great sequoias.
I remember that article when it came out, with a great photo of KB running. Two years before, in Track and Field News, there was one of the greatest photos ever, Marty Lud outleaning KB at Milrose. I think those magazines are still somewhere in ny Dad's attic, I stashed them and other memorabilia there when I went into the Army 25 years ago.

I still swear that race was at worst a dead heat...but I thought Kevin won.:)

greatest race i ever saw
tremendous photo too -- has appeared in the millrose program off and on over the years. i think joe lanz scanned it and posted it here at one point?
at millrose, i asked kevin about that race, and a bunch of people gathered around and it got real quiet, and he said something like, "You know, I don't really remember much about it. The race started at 6:20, I was in lane 2, it was 72 degrees, and we were out in 31.3 ...." and then proceeded to regale us with an incredibly detailed, colorful tale of the day. even though we knew how it finished, we all stood there transfixed. i felt honored to be there at MSG that night 30 years ago with my teammates from teaneck rooting for kevin and honored to be there again last month watching the race with him

Kevin transferred to Paramus because, he says, "There was a lack of communication between me and the coach. I was a 15-year-old kid thrown into stardom and there was nobody to talk to. I had met Coach Glynn at meets and I could talk to him. Besides, there are girls at Paramus."
Athletic Advantage! ;) And I wish he transferred to Paramus. There is a difference.

Yeah but we had Mike Glynn...Paramus "just" had Lou Lanzalotto!:D

Kevin and Roger (yes, Bergen County) both MAJOR talents in school at the same time a relatively few miles apart. The race everyone wanted to see, waiting all year for, happens at Golden West, so Roger's coach, Lou Molino, Mike Glynn, PJ Mastro (a 53.46 400H PC guy who had the 5th fastest time in the country that year) and maybe one other guy were the only ones from BC who actually saw the race.
Roger's best:
1:50.3 9th performer nationally that year
1:52.2
4:08.1y 6th performance of the year
4:09.5y
Kevin:
1:52.03m 1976
3:48.0 1500m
4:04.1 anchor on the Penn DMR)
4:08.0y (indoors - 11 lap track)
4:08.0y (indoors - 11 lap track)
4:09.3y
4:12.5y
8:59.7y indoors
9:11.3y (1976)
+ XC
I recall both of them running a fair number of sub-50 legs on 4 x 4s.

Sorry, late to respond:
Obviously very cool to be interviewed by SI, and they show up at Penn to watch me race, with photographers and all, pretty intimidating. So I run well in the DMR friday night, and they call my hotel room to ask me to dinner at Bookbinders in Philly for an interview. Glynn tells me to say I can't, because i'm having dinner with my teammates (he's got me in a headlock so i had to say it). They say bring your teammates and coaches. We go to Bookbinders and there are 16-20 of us, and i can still see my three coaches wearing the lobster bibs, with the you know what type of grin on their faces. Steak and Lobster, Cigars. Very big tab.

While I will give Marty kudos for the win (and congrats on his recent SJ HOF Induction-well deserved) I would very much like to see a side photo of the race, as they gave me a time that was one tenth slower than Marty, and I think even Marty would tell you it was closer than that! :) When I dove at the finish, I scraped all the skin off my knees. I was helped to my feet by a guy named Greg Rice, who was the father of one of my teammates, and a former world record holder at two miles. He told me to go take a victory lap. I was sure I had won. On the backstretch, I was called over to a box on the rail, by none other than Telly Savalas of Kojak fame! He tells me " Nice race baby, and he's got the tootsie pop in his mouth." Unbelieveable.

Great story and my seats were very good for Milrose . I thought you won and still do. Good to see you last week and meet your son. Dave Faherty said hello. I had the SI issues but moved and lost them some how. :)

Great story I love hearing about NJ running during the 70's. Glynn hasn't changed a bit since that article haha.

Why would it matter that he had you in a headlock? You were WAY stronger than he was!:D
My freshman year, he was feeling strong. Only freshmen and sophs in the school as it had just opened in 1975. The sophs are taunting him to run with them during XC practice. It was his first year out of Iona where he was a very good half miler (he's in their hall of fame). He goes out and runs a ahrd one with them and comes back just PUKING his brains out, green as hell. No way you could laugh but no way you couldn't. Never ran with them again.
Great memories, some of which I can actually tell on here!:)

Let's be honest here. In a PC singlet, you win; in a Bergen Catholic singlet, no one picks you for the win. It's just the way it is!:D

Looking at this photo, there is an illusion that you have hit the tape first, but the is because of the balded headed guy dead center of your chest.
Of course, the .1 difference is not unusal in near dead heats with hand timing. But, I'm sure I didn't have to tell you.
JW
Actually, it was not an illusion. I did get the tape, or string, and obviously mentioned that when the results were announced. They of course tell me the tape is just used as a finish marker, and may not be at the exact spot where the finish is. There is a picture a couple of frames later than JW's with the tape around my chest as I fall.
When talking about transferring from BC to PC: "... Besides, there are girls at Paramus."
Classic
If Kevin Bryne stayed at BC, and Hugh Monahan went there also, they would have had those two as seniors, plus Bill Leonard, John Malone, Vin Deuschel, and Quentin Franklin as juniors-who as seniors the next year won the MOC. Plus, Leonard and Malone ran about 3:51 for the 1500-they could have put together some killer relays, with or without girls!!

Was Hugh considering going there?
BC was pretty darned good around those years anyway. Ran 7:46.7 for third place at Penn in the 4 x 800 in 1977.

My brother was at Morris Catholic at the time, so I saw Kevin run many times in XC as well as Bobby Siehl and Marty Ludokowski. Reading the SI story, they mention Vinny Mutarelli from the Mount winning the Penn DMR. I ran with Vinny at Rutgers on the 2 mile relay my sophomore year a few times.
