"In the men's 5,000m, Senior Carlos Carballo came within five seconds of beating former Cardinal and 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials champion Gabe Jennings. Carballo ran behind Jennings for the first three miles. With two laps to go, Carballo overtook Jennings and ran ahead until the last 200m when Jenning's 1,500m speed kicked in and allowed him to run from Carballo altogether. Carballo, who owns a lifetime best of 14:31.98, ran a final time of 14:50.53."

it's his first meet, right? and jennings never broke 14 at 5k anyway. at least jennings is running for the right program and running overdistance to build up endurance before moving down to 1500m/mile. and at least it wasn't a 15 5k. okay a lot of over-optimism and excuse-making here.

CAL 800m runner, Chloe Jarvis sets the fastest time of the year with a 2:05.61, soundly defeating Ada Anderson of Iowa State.

Other hot times were scene by sprinter/jumper Antoinette Carter also of CAL who long-jumped 20-6.25 and ran 23.55 in the 200m, her best season opening time ever.

i was there, i thought is was actually decent weather warm but not too warm. I thought Colorado state was amazing in the mens mile around 1:00 they all ran really well and mike nicks is a beast. That 800 time is almost as fast as Alex McClary ran 1 or 2 weeks ago @ a cal Dual meet. Jarvis ran great surging in the last 200-150. great meet run very efficiently and fast i wish cal Duaa meets were run as such...

Whoever wrote this doesn't know much abuot how long a 5k is.....according to this write up there's 5628 meters in a 5k.

Another interestnig thing....If jennings really put 5 seconds on this Carbello guy in the last 200.....that's a pretty good sign that Jennings could have ran quite a bit faster then he did.

Couple points:

Nick Schneider of Duke has been a 3:47 guy (or thereabouts) for awhile now, hasn't he? Like, 3+years? 4:09ish guy in HS.

And if anybody was wondering about the Gavin Coombs 10sec. back of Spooner comment (Nice improvement by Spooner, btw):

Dead horse, but again, NC State....production? Besides a low 25.xx CC race, what has Coombs done better since HS? Wesley Smith? Here's a guy who finished second in Footlocker XC (albeit to a monstrous Solinsky performance) in 15:0x. 3:58? Someone, no doubt, will tell me, 'wait till conference' or 'they're training through.' Yea, well....

Nice 5k by soph. Pete Hess at same meet:
1 Hess, Pete Maryland 14:16.48

http://www.flashresults.com/duke/2005/index.htm

And Mrr82...kicking off 14:45 for Gabe a good indication of faster times? I've been able to kick the last 300m of any race fat and out of shape running 18+ 5ks. Kicking 200m doesn't mean much. What would have given an inkling of fitness would have been dropping a last 600 in 1:30 or something similar. 200m kick?---wow. That was pride kicking in, not Gabe.

CAL senior Chloe Jarvis put the hammer down on Ada Anderson of Iowa State with a season best 2:05.61 last weekend which puts her right in line to break her PR of 2:05.12 at this weekend's CAL "Golden Bear" Invitational, against Oregon, Houston, Boise State, and Sac-State.

Jarvis' 2:05.61 currently leads the Nation!
