i love doing it. It gives you more of a race feel and i push myself harder. It also helps with form.

I wear flats or spikes during workouts, but I do for my easy runs too so it's a little different.
But there is a reason that almost all the top runners wear spikes/flats during workouts. You can run faster and it's good for economy. It's especially important if you are doing a race pace workout.

I believe that running fast causes improvements in form. It's your body economizing. Wearing flats or spikes will definitely help with this. Just be careful starting off because if you're not used to the minimalism then you can open yourself to injury and/or very sore calves.
I do track work in Eldo 2s, Wednesday semi-long runs and Sunday long runs in Marathoners, and the rest of my mileage is in my Vapors (25-30 mpw on them right now). My calves were ridiculously sore at the start, but they don't hurt any more (except after hard hill workouts, but what do you expect?). Just be smart about it and I think it's beneficial.

wear spikes if you're doing a track workout.
wear flats if you're doing a threshold run.
wear trainers if you're doing an easy run/recovery run.

What it comes down to is specificity of training, you want to train in as close to what you would be racing in as possible.

My opinion exactly. I used to be super paranoid about working out in the spikes I raced in b/c I didn't want them to wear out prematurely. Now, I figure each shoe has a different feel so I train in what I'm gonna race in so my legs develop to work perfectly with the shoe I race in.

Trainers that are designed for overpronated with tons of support and extra big heels and paddings are ment for 6 to 10 minute miles not 62 second quarters. I work out in adizero prs.

I am thinking of getting adizero prs for summer tempos, and maybe tempos in season, are they any good? Also for using spikes, i dont have great PR's 5:39 mile, but i have always toyed with the idea of using spikes on a speed workout. I never do though, would it help at all?

thanks for the replies. you all made really good points, but the main problem i have with working out with flats/spikes is because i tend to get blisters. do you have any suggestions on how to prevent this? because i race in the same flats/spikes and dont get em. i guess my coach knew what he was doing lol

Wear socks if you don't already. Otherwise, maybe your shoes don't fit you right. You shouldn't be getting blisters from your spikes if you don't normally from you trainers.

when i race in the spikes my feet are fine, but when i do workouts in em my feet become sore. i broke them in today so the next time i do a workout i'll be able to determine whether or not they fit right. i hate wearing socks with spikes

You should always do interval work in spikes or flats. Not training in the shoes you race in is just down right retarded. It also builds strength in your feet and lower leg muscles.

I use Kayanos for my long runs and my recovery. I use DS Trainers for middle distance runs and really long interval or tempos. I use flats for short speed work and road races. Then my spikes for all my track workouts eldos II for longer workouts and milers for shorter stuff.
