I asked the same question last year and still do not know why they would use a place so far out of the way. As the male coach of a Girls Catholic School it makes it very, very hard to get the girls to Egg Harbor overnight. We had 6 girls and a mother in one room as I could only get one mother to go to lovely Egg Harbor. Fortunatly I leave soon for So Plainfield which has to be cooler than last year as there was no shade and temps of over 90

yes and so does Neptune, plus 2 long jump pits, and it's in Central Jersey, plenty of seating, even hotels for teams that stay overnight. the only thing it doesnt have over Egg Harbor is parking. Egg Harbor has WAY more parking, but Neptune's isn't bad. It's better than South Plainfield

Holmdel and Neptune are in the middle of New Jersey? When did they move?
Maybe they figured one location in the north, one in the south? Also, Danser says the schools are not exactly clamoring to host these meets so there might not be that many choices.

something else Don has always talked about is the ability of sites to guarantee a certain number of volunteers, usually members of the track team that aren't competing ... to move hurdles ... run results to the press ... set up pole vault and high jump pits ... etc. that's why colleges just don't work out. by the time states roll around, everybody is gone. ... also have to have an active and reliable booster club or similar thing and facilities to run food concession ... i know Don spends a lot of time going out to sites, talking to potential site directors, examining tracks and field event areas, always looking for the best possible sites. things like ample parking, proximity to highways and availability of reliable volunteers are huge plusses for EHT apparently

the official center of New Jersey is 13 miles southeast of Trenton, pretty much I-195 which runs West-East from coast to coast and runs into what town? Neptune

that would be mansfield township, so ... let's move operations to northern burlington regional
nice new track

So far out of the way? That is a north-jersey biased post if I've ever seen one. I'm sure Cherokee, Winslow, Absegami etc. don't feel that way.
There are track fans in South Jersey too. MOC is held in South plainfield which is in the northern quartile of NJ, so that is already a long commute to make from the South.
I am very happy that Egg Harbor hosts states. It gives people in the south a good chance to view some quality state competition. It is also a much closer drive for anyone who is south of Lakewood (which is still a large portion of the NJ population). Sure it may be a long drive for someone from Passaic. But people in the South have to travel all the way to South Plainfield for MOC and oftentimes their state-groups races, if they get the unlucky draw and are stuck with the burden of making the trip. Having some state races at Egg Harbor give these people at least a chance of seeing some action. Its fine the way it is.

I thought it was Tom's River but okay, Neptune. How convenient for you. So does that mean you'll move the other site to the center of the state to or do Ocean City, Kingsway and all those other south Jersey schools have to travel to the northern part of the state?
Honestly, I'm FROM north Jersey but the northern bias here - "I want it convenient for me and the hell with anyone else" - is pretty bad.
For YEARS wasn't the State Grouped meet held in New Brunswick??? All of us Southern folks had to travel up north ALL THE TIME. It's nice it's down south for a change! LOL

And if we're going to get all nit-picky about it, it should move back there.
The population center of NJ is in Milltown, NJ, just east of the Turnpike, only about 3 miles from the Rutgers facility...
...which just happens to be 8 lanes, great field events, and plenty of parking. All the things you need. Shorest commute for the greatest number of people.
Why it isn't there makes no sense at all.
(and before everyone jumps on me, yes, I know, Rutgers would charge money for the facility, and the NJSIAA is morally opposed to paying facility fees for championships.)

like i said a bit ago, rutgers can't offer volunteers to help set up hurdles, move jump pits, run concessions, etc. a HS coach can tell his freshmen and sophomores they're working all weekend, and they'll show up and work. a college coach can't. college kids are gone by the time these meets roll around anyway. without volunteers, you can't run the meet. don would love to go to rutgers but i doubt it'll ever happen
by the way ... $2 for a bottle of water at Egg Harbor. that's a disgrace

Whats The Parking Situation Like At South Plainfield? Is There Some Kind Of Shuttle To And From The Hs? I Remember In 2006 Cars Were Parked On The Grass Behind The Bleachers.

they could just do it the way the NCAA tourney works - have a "host" school that will provide the volunteers.

That's what they're doing now. Ocean City is Group III in South Plainfield. I have no problem with Egg Harbor, nor really any place cuz i live in Central Jersey so no place is to far for me, and im going to the meet either way. I was making a case for Neptune because it is a much better choice than egg harbor

My point is that you can't move one meet north to Neptune and leave the other one north of there and be fair to the southerners.
Water at South Plainfield was $1 or $1.50, I don't remember which.

WHERE CAN YOU PARK? HIGH SCHOOL AND/OR THE TRACK FACILITY?

Parking is only a problem if you try to park in the lot right in front of the track. Park on the street or behidn the track on the grass by the shot circle where Mike Alleman of Scotch Plains threw 66-0.25 to win tonight. An amazingly consistent performance tonight, just a great series. I believe every throw was north of 63 and a half feet (but it was hard to tell because the official announced the throws in a whisper.

Where are you going to sit? No lights for Friday night or Wednesday. We don't get any site free. Fees range fronm 2000 to 20,000, depending on what the school says we need for security.

haha, might want to watch out parking near the shotput area. might get a broken window with the way vena and alleman are battling.

if both meets were held in the exact middle of the state (population center) then the greatest good would come to the greatest number of people. if the two meets are held equi-distant from the center then the greatest good is still achieved. i assume thats what they are at least aiming for by putting one up north and one south.

it's not for the reason that, by all accounts, the facilities at Egg Harbor are substandard.
don't all you south jersey track fans want to see competition at a quality venue?
the issue here is not the geographic location of egg harbor (however "out of the way" it may to you Dean:D ), it is the fact that it is not anywhere near the caliber of facility that is deserved by the athletes.
