Symmonds was leading for the first 400 or so.
Lagat had it up to final 100m, but looked strained as Willis kicked past.

it was a pretty exciting race.
i met Rankin and Solinsky afterwards, and Solinsky even gave me one of his racing flats. and i never knew Rankin's manager was Meb's younger brother...

5th Ave is traditionally the last race of the year for a lot of guys.

i think he meant for lagat's career, not this season.

they said today that he'll definitely be coming back for the millrose games again.

so i would expect him to run through the 2009 season.

lagat needs to start completely focusing on 3k/5k. Obviously he can still have success at 1500/mile because he's so talented, but his best chance now is definitely the 5k.

What is wrong with people? Lagat lost to the Olympic bronze medalist by .1 seconds, and he's done at the 1500? Ridiculous. Didn't he just win a big European 1k race a few weeks ago? This forum can be freaking ridiculous sometimes.

This is a downhill...straight down 5th Avenue. The course runs approx 3.50 seconds faster than a track mile.

Why would lukezic hang them up? He is still in the top 10 milers in the US and only 24.... And beat some solid guys in this race too.

Of course he can still be competetive and very good at 1500/mile, but that's because he's coming off a 3:26! Compared to his past potential, the times he's been running are mediocre. He's still very fast but he doesn't have the super speed to close on an olympic or world championship field anymore. Sure, Lagat could continue with the 1500 and do well, but I think someone like him wants some more championships or at least some blazing times, and that doesn't look like it's going to happen in the 15. If he really orients himself towards 5k workouts I think we could see his 1500 speed translate into 12:40s for 5k.

Despite the Olympic performance, he is one of the best closers in the world.

Not a world class field, but this is a shorter race than the 5th avenue mile, and he still beat Willis, who beat him there, and Symmonds, an 800 guy, both handily defeated. Lagat was hurt at the Olympics. He is FINE.

Seems like a great couple of races with many people I know. The season is finished now for basically everybody who's not doing a half marathon or marathon I think. The Olympic year seemed better in 2004 for distances. Does anybody remember where in 2004 everybody was anticipating the Olympic Mens 1500m/5000m highly? It was Hicham vs Bernard and Hicham vs Kenenisa, it was great! :)

Again, he is still very fast, but I don't think fast enough. I suppose I could be wrong, but remember that he's coming off the second fastest time ever run in the 1500. Seems like a gamble to continue with the 15. I mean, he didn't run any super fast times in the event this year. He could have a couple good years left, but his oppurtunities for the 15 are waning while he could start focusing on the 5k now and be incredibly successful before he gets too old.

i want to say he ran 3:33 this year, but i cant find where i saw that.

i def. think he should start running more 3k/5k and have a go at the american record.

Lagat ran 3:32.75 just over two weeks ago to win in Rieti (by nearly 2 deconds).

Top 10 in the US gets you paid. I'd rather be a 3:35 guy and not have get a real job then give it up and work for a living.
