I was told this by two different coaches today, and at a meet yesterday I observed multiple athletes wearing them during the race and none were DQ'ed. The coaches said the rule just went into affect yesterday. Are the coaches mistaken or is this a new rule?

It's been a rule for my whole high school career at least (3+ years).

No watches allowed since I coached at Penfield 1993 to 2004, and I believe we could not wear watches during the 80's. Let me check state regulations...and edit soon I hope...after I get youngest asleep.;)

Well I know that they haven't been allowed in the past as they fall under the no jewelry rule... but from what I have been hearing an exception was just made for watches yesterday.

This rule seems right.
I always wondered in the past why NY'ers werent allowed to use them.
It doesnt give any advantage because as McCain states, a watch is economically friendly to all.
Good idea for the change.
I heard Obama was the one that suggested the rule modification...

But really though...I do wonder why they wanted the change...

QFsame. That said, if everyone else was wearing a watch I would feel like I was at a disadvantage without one, so I would probably wear one.

Two thumbs down, IMO.

It would be interesting to hear why...

i dont like watches because you shouldnt be worrying about time, you should be racing kids. if you win, the time will come with it.

This appears to be a new rule. I think I would like wearing a watch for my races, but my concern is that ill-informed officials would try to DQ me. It really isn't a risk that I want to take in a meet like sectionals, so I probably wont even though I would like to.

nyrunner09

for championship type races i definitely wouldn't wear a watch. but for a meet like my county meet where its only 3miles it's convenient to get my splits accurately you know. but at meets like states feds flne i don't see the need for it since your not going for a time your just doing your best to win the race. Either way it doesnt matter, because even in those championship races if a kid is busy looking at his watch then that is just one more advantage that i may have against him.

yea i have my county championships tommorow at VCP, im debating wheter to wear it or not. What do u guys think?

hahaha i love it.
Since i began running, ive heard kids bitching about how they should be able to wear a watch (which they should)
And once they institute the rule...kids dont wanna use them.

And I wore a watch last weekend at Brown, you look at it once, twice maybe 3 times all race just to see where you at.
Nobody constantly looks down, if you do, it obviously means your not concentrated enough.

Don't unless you know the mile and two mile marks. which at vcp who exactly knows? because i would like to know

Now that I'm in college, I was sort of excited to wear a watch during XC. But after trying it out for 2 races, I stopped wearing it because I found that splits were something far less important to think about during a race than everyone in front of you.

I'm sure someone like "dand" or another respected person in our sport can shed more light but a previous post questioned the reasoning. I heard it was partially because the arguement has been that technically watches are not even to be allowed in practice b/c it is a safety issue. That of course can not happen with Track & Field athletes. People argued that if they have been worn in practice, then why not meets? Well NYSPHSAA gave in and said okay, jewelry in competitions is allowable.
A higher up in NYS official Land did announce yesterday at a meet that watches are now allowed to be worn..

Coaches can give splits - they just have to give it to everyone.

It is indeed a fact, watches are now allowed during practice and meets for
cross country. The official request had been for all three seasons, but the
NYSPHSAA only passed it for xc!?! So now, you can wear watches in practice
and meets in xc, but legally can not wear them in practices or meets in
winter or spring track.

I just hope that all officials are made known of this rule change. I would hate to see people get dq'ed because of ill informed officials.

minde15
10-23-2008, 12:25 PM
they wouldnt get dq'd because you could just protest the dq under the new rules...

also i thought they should have had the watch rule thrown away a long time ago, it should be your choice whether or not you want to wear one, regardless if you use it to take your splits or not. I always wear my watch now in college, sometimes i take splits every mile, sometimes just total time, or sometimes none, it just really depends. at no point do i look down at my watch because we having ppl yelling out splits at every mile, they are just more for a guide after the race for me.

regardless, it is your personal choice and i see no need to restrict that freedom.

since when can you not wear watches for practices, that would not only a really stupid rule, but there is no way to enforce that. how do you think people time their runs and workouts.... and what are they going to do, tell someone they cant race because they wore a watch at practice? who's going to report the athletes that wear watches at practice, their own coach?

that's the point...it was a stupid rule that nobody knew about and is just simply impossible to enforce and would never happen but apparently it was written somewhere

I would guess 99% of coaches in NYS had (have) no idea there is a rule against wearing watches in practice.

well my mother is my coach and she said she got an email from our section cordinator saying watches are allowed, but didn't tell my team because its to risky, we have a couple of shady officials

I wore my watch today with no issues in leagues. I asked one of the officials before the race and he said I was all set to go. He said they have been having that debate for the 30 years he has been an official and that he was really surprised that they finally made a decision.

our coach always hated watches, so didn't tell the team it was okay, however, when an athlete found out about it and mentioned it to her, she said she'd "heard a rumor about that"

one of 2 things is the case: either section v didn't send this out to coaches (seems less likely) or she outright lied and tried to avoid letting the kids know (seems more likely)

of course, section v has been known to be idiotic in the past

i also know a bunch of the Wayne (section v) girls hadn't heard the rule change, as they pointed out that some of our guys were wearing watches
