I was out running 15 miles around a 3 mile loop the other day, and I saw two kids walking with their dad while wearing "hydration packs" on their back. Honestly-- WTF?!
I've never run with a water bottle or "fanny pack", and I've never seen another serious runner doing so. I either hydrate well beforehand, run somewhere where I know there's fountains, or leave a bottle at my car and make planned stops. Why is it always the slower runners you see with these things? Don't you think they'd get the hint from faster runners that they don't need to be carrying a water bottle/hydration pack? It's added weight! Ok, just thought I would bring this up cause I'm seeing more and more people wearing these, which coincides with the recent article about water intoxication.

obviously it is good for extending exercise. im guessing its good for marathoners who likes to use their prefered drink.

seems like kind of a hassle to run with all that water/whatever drink you have though.
Marathoners have water stations. They don't carry their own water.

I don't know if I qualify as a fast or slow runner in your eyes (1:54/3:55/15:30/25:50), but I run with a bottle on some of my long runs if I know ther isn't going to be a place to grab a drink. More often than not I'm talking a 12-14 miler in the woods. Sure it might weigh me down ever so slightly and I know I can finish the run without the fluids, but why train like that. I used to hammer all the time like that. Now that I take care of myself better on those long runs I recover better and get better results from the successive days workouts. Plus I don't sit around the rest of the day feeling like crap. I've got othere things to do with my life that run and recover from my runs.
Although I will say that the NY Times article that was published last week is a load of crap.

Wow, that's a first! I could understand running and dropping it off somewhere, but doesn't it bother you to have to carry something like this for that long? I once bought pepper spray with a handstrap so it fit in my palm, but after a couple of runs, I was completely annoyed. I can carry keys, but that's as large/heavy as I go.

Mostly, I think you use those things for looong runs (over 2hrs) where you might be going into the woods or something, or it's hot. And also, I think you fill them with something other than water... a carbohydrate drink or even Gu or Powergel or something. I've never carried anything on a run, since I've never gone more than 15 miles and I usually run by water fountains, but my dad will carry a single bottle sometimes and he says it's ok

My bottle is set up so that it lies horizontally across the small of my back, not vertically like most belts.

That's the one I use. For long road runs we usually put out a cooler halfway through or do a double loop so we can hit our bottles at our cars midway.

however it does take a little while to get used to drinking while running, hence the fuel belts for practicing fluid intake while running.

must be nice to have water stations on all their training runs

I'm pretty sure he was talking about during the race here.
