How bad is the traffic driving to Sunken Meadow (from middletown NY) early Saturday morning?

If it gets done really early the traffic is not bad at all.

Thanks, I would probably be entering the NYC area between 5:30am-6am...any suggestions on the easiest way to get to the GW bridge coming down 87 from middletown?

Stay on 87 south to the Palisades Parkway; think it's exit 13 but not sure. Head south on that and it'll take you right to the bridge.

Why bother with the GW? Take the Tappen Zee instead, follow signs for 87 (Major Deegan Expy). Get off for 95 North (Cross Bronx Expy). Stay on that til you see the signs for the Throgs Neck Bridge. Follow them over the bridge. Stay in center lane and you'll be on the Clearview Expy. (Many speed traps here, be careful). Take Clearview to the LIE (495) east. Take 495 to exit 53 and follow signs for Sunken Meadow (you'll be travelling north). You'll then be on the Sunken Meadow Parkway. Take that to the end (toll booths). When you pass the toll booths the speed limit is 30 mph and they strictly enforce it, so be very careful. you'll cross a small bridge (more like an overpass) and at the bottom make a right. Follow this road down and you'll see a parking lot on the left. This lot is down at the finish line. Depending on the time you arrive, getting through the toll booths at SM can be a hassle. During the St. Anthony's invitational, there have been lines as long as 30 minutes, so plan accordingly. Good Luck!!!

If this meet follows form as to what happened the last time the state meet was held at SMSP, spectators will probably not be allowed to park in the large lot by the finish line. However, you can park in the really large lots located before the starting line. Another alternative is to make the right hand turn before the small bridge / overpass, follow that road down, and park in Lot #4.

This is basically what I did in October coming down from the Albany area to see the course
Took me less than 3.5 hours, although it was a Sunday morning around 7 or so when I left...but overall, a surprisingly easy trip
I'll be making it again in less than 8 hours, and sleeping in my car Friday night
Woo for saving money!
