Good luck to all of the young men and women competing this coming winter t/f season. Hopefully the distance runners will be able to pick up from where they left off in the xc season. There were some pretty notable performances this past season at Sunken Meadow on the boy's side (witness the 13 young men who bettered the venerable 17:00 minute mark and 5 of which ran 16:30 or better), while on the girls side only 6 bettered 20:00.99 (as compared to last year's 11 that bettered 20:00.17).
As for the sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers and throwers, it should prove to be an interesting season given the numbers of returning athletes on both the boys side and the girls side.
Just one person's observations.

I think they can put together some good relays this year. Supposedly a lot of new sprinters came out and developed and there is a possibility of a good 4x2. We return Squires who ran like 158, Dematteo who has run like 158 or 59 and had a good xc season so he could be a very solid miler, Jameison is back and hes already run 125 solo at suffolk, and we have a couple returning sub 205 guys. Should be interesting...I wish there was a DMR at states for teams(not just sections). Wed have SWR, Smithtown, Sachem,Ward Mellville, Northport, Hills West and some other teams that are slipping my mind.
some impressive times at stanner today:
3 Harold Jamison HHH West 1:22.25
4 Mike Lopizzo Northport 2:34.17
2 Bobby Andrews Shore Wading River 4:17.39
3 Frank Fezza Sachem North 4:22.72
1 Dominick Dematteo HHH West 4:23.84
2 K. Wightman Shore Wading River 4:25.01
3 Justin Sheridan Walt Whitman 4:25.41
3 Evan Bloomberg Northport 9:33.37

Wightman probably would have ran faster if he was in the first heat, he was all alone in the second heat.

Not in the 1600 he wasn't. Justin Sheridan simply blew him off the track.

still, second place running a 4:34 after running the 3200 and 1000 is very good. Justin also ran an impressive 4x8 leg splitting 2:06 with short rest.

Congrats to the state qualifiers from Tuesday.
Any reason why the meet is held so early (almost a full month before the state meet?)

I think the fact that Section 8,11 have closed schools next week has something to do with it. Upstate schools, I believe, only have a four day weekend. Is the problem that state quals is too early, or that the state meet is too late? Winter's a tough season for training in many ways.
As a coach, training periodization is very tough, keeping kids at top form for a month. Maybe more, considering national meets. Some of us have dual meets in late March. The athletes have to rest too.
