If we would put in some plan (not blanket amnesty) to allow people like him to earn the right (boy that phrase sounds funny to me) to stay here without being deported than I would have no sympathy for anyone given an option. We have no immigration policy now so until we have one, my position is guys like him are no threat to our health and security.

Why does "earn the right" sound so funny? That's exactly what they should be doing by going through the legalization process. They did have an option. And the children of illegals already get a free pass if they're born here.
What do you mean we have no immigration policy? The hell we don't. But as usual, the government was asleep and only enforced it half-assed or looked the other way, mostly because of NAFTA. That caused a huge drop in wages and jobs lost to cheap foreign labor. Why do you think they came into this country any way possible, legal or illegal? Because the jobs were here. So people took advantage and circumvented the process. Manufacturing and industrial jobs that Americans used to raise families on are either gone or employ foreign labor. And as the trade agreements are so one-sided because foreign countries don't even consume what is made, and illegals will send their money back to their country and not invest it in US goods, that trade deficit will never, ever be made up.
I tell you, if taxpayers around the country found out an illegal was being paid a stipend by their school district, you would see all hell break loose, especially when certified teachers are losing jobs.
What you fail to see is while this little caper seems insignificant and not a threat, it's representative of what goes on in a larger scale that affects taxpaying, legal citizens.....and also those who are non-citizens but are legally in the country.
Your friend there is a threat, like it or not.
