Morro Bay Bitten by the Flu Bug

During the second week of the season, at Ojai, posted times of 16:06, 17:13, 17:45, 17:57, and 18:20 for a team of 1:27:21. At Bell-Jeff ran 1:20:45 with the times of 15:09, 15:40, 16:27, 16:38, and 16:51. Their #2 returning man, Weber, who has run 17:03 at Mt. SAC, has not been seen in the results.
|
According to SLO Tribune staff writer Donovan Aird on 10/29/09, up to four of Morrow Bay's top scoring crew were missing at the San Luis Opispo County Meet on October 29 as they had "recently battled flu".
A review of the October meets would seem to confirm this sad news report of illness late in the Cross Country season:
1. The October 29 SLO County Meet at Laguna Lake 5,000 meters: Morro Bay's #1 runner, James Shipe, does not run; Morro Bay's #3 runner, PJ VanBuerden, does not run; Morrow Bays season opening #6 (Ruoff), #7 (McGonagill) and #8 (Duracher) also do not run.
2. The October 14 League Meet at River Park in Lompoc 3 miles: With more news reports of illness, the results are missing Morro Bay's #1 runner (Shipe), #5 (Arroyo), and #8 (Duracher).
3. The October 3 Brug Invite 5,000 meters: Missing in the results are #2 Bryan Carroll and #3 PJ VanBuerden.
Obviously, we're all naturally hopeful that Morro Bay will be back at full-strength and in good health at their upcoming Los Padres League Final on Wednesday, November 4.
Even assuming that the fine #1 James Shipe and Morro Bay gets back to full-strength, a look back at their September showings may indeed cast a shadow on their now number two CIF SS D4 Ranking:
4. Morro Bay's team time at the September 12 invite of 1:21:54 must be considered in light of the reported shorter 2.6 mile course;
5. Morro Bay's team time at the September 19 Ojai invite of 1:27:25 (with Shipe at 16:07, Carroll at 17:14, VanBuerden at 17:46, Eto at 17:58, and Arroyo at 18:20) was around 2 1/2 minutes better than another D4 squad in the rankings, Nordhoff, who ran 1:29:59. While Morro Bay didn't run Mt. SAC on October 23, perhaps due to illness, Nordhoff did and ran 1:27:58. If Morro Bay continues with the 2 1/2 minute team time advantage, that puts Morro Bay at 1:25:28. Sounds a lot like another team that coachinl.a. likes--Salesian--whose team time at Mt. SAC was 1:25:27.
6. Ignoring Morro Bay's super number one runner Shipe for the moment, Morro Bay's team gap spread between number two to five at the October 29 SLO County meet was 1:41; at the October 14 League meet at River Park in Lompoc was 1:12; at the September 26 Bell Jeff invite was 1:11; at the September 19 Ojai Invite was 1:06; at the September 12 Morro invite was 1:12. Morro Bay may be challenged at the number five spot when the going gets tough in the Finals.
Absent a brilliant showing next week for Morro Bay at their League Finals, my take is that the now number two Morro Bay is going to have quite a task on their hands to protect their runner-up position to Laguna Beach in the D4 CIF SS race.
Mercifully, it will all get sorted out at CIF SS D4 finals on November 21.

That would also be my order. Since we've all seen what they've been doing this cross country season, here's a "refresher" on the Spring track season as well:
1. Hofmeister (Laguna Beach) ran 9:14.49 for 3200m on May 23, 2009 at the CIF SS D3 Final;
2. Newton-Neal (Laguna Beach) ran 4:24.44 for 1600m on May 23, 2009 in the CIF SS D3 Final;
3. James Shipe (Morro Bay) ran 4:20 for 1600m in May 2009 CIF D4 Final and 9:38.55 for 3200m in the CIF D4 Final--Shipe ran 15:37 at Mt. SAC to get 3rd as a Junior in the CIF SS D4 Finals;
And then:
4. David Abergel (Harvard Westlake) ran "only" 4:43 for 1600m on April 4, 2009--Abergel ran 16:03 at Mt. SAC to get 1st on 10/23/09 in the D4 Sweeps race #39.
Those look to be your D4 race leaders.

I'd like to add Andrew Cannata (Bishop Montgomery) and J.J. Dominguez (Bosco Tech) in this conversation of front runners of D4..... just saying.
i mean if you're talking about Abergel who ran 16:03 as #4 then J.J. Dominguez ran 16:06 at San Gabriel Valley Challenge almost a month ago. same course.. but the conditions probably favored Dominguez... I don't know.. and Cannata ran 15:24 @ Del rey league Finals yeseterday.. bad race for Dominguez

Dominguez dominated Del Rey league duals tho

Thanks "racecarbakword" for pointing out that there looks to be two lead groupings with some likely separation between the superstars of D4 (Hofmeister, Newton-Neal, and Shipe) and the next bunch (Abergel, Cannata, Dominguez, and ?).
As to conditions, Abergel's 10/23 masterpiece in the D4 Sweeps race at Mt. SAC was run in the later afternoon at 89 (or so) degrees in the bright sun with a very slight breeze. Abergel wasn't challenged and won going away. From the look of confidence in his eyes, I'd say he can go under sixteen at Mt. SAC to get another PR on that course.

19 days to Finals!!!
If Morro Bay is healthy at the end, they will finish top 3. They are known to come on strong, and run their best when it counts.
I put them in the 2nd spot mainly because I converted their Bell-Jeff time to Mt. Sac. The Bell-Jeff course usually runs 1 minute faster than Mt. SAC. At the end of September, Morro Bay ran a 1:20:45 at Bell-Jeff which converts roughly to a 1:25:45 at Mt. SAC. Also, they ran a :39 faster team time than runner-up Harvard-Westlake, the 4th ranked team. If Morro Bay is faster than any team at the end of September, history tells me that they are going to increase their lead come November.
Morro Bay never runs at the Mt. SAC Invitational.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conversion of Bell-Jeff to Mt. SAC team time(late September)/Mt. SAC Invitational team time(late October)
Morro Bay: 1:25:45/NT
Harvard Westlake: 1:26:24/1:25:23(-1:01)
Paraclete: 1:27:50/1:27:12(-:38)
Maranatha: 1:28:58/1:27:02(-1:56)
Crespi: 1:30:07/1:28:37(-1:30)
Natural progressions one might expect in a month span.

Mission League Championships: Harvard-Westlake Excels

Until I see Vanderschans in the results, I am not going to factor him in. He has only been seen once all year. If he races, Harvard-Westlake gains the needed boost to surpass Bosco Tech and Morro Bay.

Harvard-Westlake now moves back up to its rightful position.
What: Mission League Finals: Varsity Boys
Where: Crescenta Valley Park
When: November 4; 3:37PM
Conditions: A perfect 76 degrees; mostly shade; slight breeze
The Course: Rolling hills, hard pack trails, grass
The Review: CIF SS #3 Ranked Harvard-Westlake Cements Placement
Harvard-Westlake’s fine #1 Runner (David Abergel) and #2 runner (Kevin On) were obviously working with instructions to help “pack-up” their whole team through the first mile. So, the start of the race saw all seven Harvard-Westlake together around ¾ back in the pack through the first 200 meters. At the mile, and according to the plan, the red clad Harvard-Westlake team came through as a team at 5:28 (Abergel), 5:29 (On), 5:33, 5:35, 5:36, 5:37 and 5:39.
Abergel and On took off from there. Over the next half mile to get to 1 ½ miles, Abergel and On put 11 seconds on their teammates. Over the next ¾ mile to get to 2 ¼ miles, Abergel and On widened the gap to Harvard-Westlake’s number three to 25 seconds. By the finish, Abergel and On widened the gap to Harvard-Westlake’s number three even further to 35 seconds. Both looked terrific at the end—they can go faster I suspect.
Using a stopwatch, the unofficial times for the Harvard-Westlake team at the Crescenta Valley Park course was Abergel at 16:14, On at 16:21, and Harvard-Westlake’s remaining runners at 16:56, 16:59, 17:17, 17:30 and 17:36 at the rear for Chris Vanderschans who clearly isn’t showing his early season form after an illness.
Unofficial team time of 83:47 which, according to Rich Gonzalez who was at the microphone at the meet, is a slower team time than would be achieved at Mt. SAC. If I heard correctly, this Crescenta Valley Course is 18 seconds per runner SLOWER than Mt. SAC. So, 18 seconds times five runners equals 1:30 which is to be deducted to arrive at a Mt. SAC prediction of 82:17.

Mission League Finals: Notre Dame and Crespi Sparkle
The CIF SS #10 ranked Notre Dame and the CIF SS #13 ranked Crespi also sparkled at the Mission League Finals at Crescenta Valley Park yesterday, November 4.
Notre Dame (16:08, 16:20, 16:33, 17:48, 18:01) Team Time 84:50
Crespi (16:37, 16:47, 17:19, 17:19, 17:55) Team Time 85:47
The "official" results for the CIF SS #3 Harvard-Westlake show a team-time of 83:48.
Very impressive for all three teams on a course that's reported to run a minute and a half slower than Mt. SAC!
