I think this is the first time I've ever posted on a forum at 3:40, but I'm heading out for Peoria in about a half-hour. Good luck to everyone running at Detweiller today, and to everyone spectating... ENJOY THE 70 DEGREE WEATHER IN NOVEMBER!

Quote:
Good weather = 15:45 All-State cutoff.
Sounds about right to me, that's usually where it is for Class 1A. Last year it was 15:50 and that was in, what, 38 degree weather with snow falling during the race? What a difference a year makes.

Quote:
But then I can't wait for 3A! I hear there's a chance for 35 to break 15 in that race. My bet is gunna be 38 who break it.
Yeah that race is gonna be nuts. Verzbicas possibly busting Virgin's record and then a whole parade of runners under 15 and possibly 15+ of those sub-15 that will not be All-State. Sheesh.

Dont say I didnt tell you so

Wow, is all I have to say about this years class A state! Good run to all and way to shake things up. 1 point between the #1 and #2 team.

Congrats to all.

Does anyone know what Canton and SNCC will look like next year? and what are your thoughts?

Newman loses #1 #3(usually 4) and #7
Canton loses #1 #3 #4 #5

The strongest team returning next year is Beecher. They only lose one runner. Same with Westmont, but it's their #2. So Beecher should be the strongest returner, then Westmont. Newman could be top 10. Canton might not qualify. They don't have much depth.

And the times all seemed slow. Rehfeldt is a better runner than Smith was last year. I think if it was a lil cooler, then there would have been more under 15. And we may have possibly seen a broken record if Verzbicas hadn't have gone out about 4:25.

In the running Davis, Hoebert, Joaquin, Hale, Avenatti, Slater, Harkness, Elkins, Jepson, Simpson, Heiman
I had 23/25 as Simpson and Heiman made the list. Hittenmiller did horrible and Mosbach didn't do so hot. For the teams, I underestimated Carlinville Canton and Tremont. I totally called the Newman situation. Polzin and Griffin had bad races, Farringer had a great one. BV didn't run up to potential. Their usual #3 didn't have his best race ever. But they still did good. Sorry to here beecher's #3 got DQ'd. Would have gotten 3rd, 1 pt behind canton.

Freeburg: 20th place, had 5 runners finish in the last 15 people. Hmmm.....maybe they were saving themselves for nationals???

And I'm just doing the sectional vs sectional to clear the air with soloist =P

Decatur: 5th 6th 9th 10th 18th = 48 2nd (If beecher got 3rd, they still would have got 2nd.) 4 All-State
Elmwood: 2nd 7th 11th 14th 15th = 49 3rd 5 All-Staters
Aurora: 1st 4th 8th 13th 16th = 42 1st (Westmont had an off day.) 11 All-Staters
Edw: 3rd 12th 17th 19th 20th = 71 4th 5 All-Staters

I know one of their runners lost a shoe in the first mile, and another got stepped on as they were running through the triangle. But Arndt and Barnacle going 3-4, that was impressive.

What I think is even more impressive is a FRESHMAN getting second! That's nuts. First freshman ever to get second in an IHSA class A state meet. And second freshman ever in the history of all classes to recieve 2nd as freshman. The other... jorge torres.

Quick note on Winnebago girls XC. Yesterday was there 12th state title and fifth in a row.

Up until last year only two people had ever run on four cross country state team championship. That was Julie Justmann and Erin Redig, from Palatine's run of four straight championships in the 90's(?). Last year Winnebago's Meg Skaggs joined the club after Winnebago's 2008 fourth state title in a row win. This year Winnebago's Alexandria Palm and Jessica Palm (no relation by the way) become the fourth and fifth to ever do it. Jessica ran jh and four years high school XC for Bago and had never been higher than fourth on the team til the last race of her career, when she was third person to cross the line for the Lady Indians. Alexandria struggled with some health issues all year and had to change from a front runner to a strategy that saw her moving up late in the race. Her ninth place finish yesterday gave her four all-state performance to go along with the four state titles. A. Palm and Justman(top 13 all four years) are the only runners to be on four state championship teams and all-state in their four years competing in Illinois High School Cross Country.

Regarding the sectional standings,
I like how you put in Westmont as having an off day, but forget to mention that Beecher and SJO also had a off days.

Beecher has 26th place finisher dq'd and Polzin runs over a minute slower than the last time at Peoria a few weeks ago. Those two mistakes alone without even looking at how their other five runners ran it cost them almost 100 points.

SJO must have had some sickness, because they normally are right with Urbana U-High and Robinson. They should have been top 12. Not sure what happened to them.

I think you would have to admit those two teams had off days.

I really don't think there was that much disparity in the Aurora and Decatur Sectionals. And the Elmwood sectional was not that far back.

Point is that I wouldn't be gloating too much in the fact that the Aurora Sectional was so much better than the others. Take two runners each from Beecher and SJO and insert the times they ran at Peoria Heights and you have a completely different scenerio.

BTW, Monticello returns six, including top five.

You were close, but the All-State cut-off was Darm of Ottawa-Marquette who ran 15:57.

Quote:
*Additional 10 runners under 16 who won't make All-State.
Darm's 15:57 was the last guy who broke 16. I'm going to blame the unusually warm weather for this. It was already nearing 70 degrees for the boys 1A race. I was on a weather site that had records for Peoria going back to 1970 (when they began running at Detweiller) and the only year that I could find warmer than the official high of 74 degrees yesterday was in 1978 when it was 75.

Although I've gotta say that I'm assuming that ever since they started running at Detweiller, State was on the first Saturday of November (2nd Saturday of November if it was like last year when Sectionals were on the 1st and State on the 8th)

Quote:
But then I can't wait for 3A! I hear there's a chance for 35 to break 15 in that race. My bet is gunna be 38 who break it.
Again, the warm weather (74 degrees for the Class 3A races) probably affected this. 23 guys ran under 15, and the last 2 for All-State were 15:00 and 15:01. I'd be willing to bet that if it had been lower 60s then you would have seen even more of a parade of sub-15 guys.

Another great day at state by Bago. Surprise, surprise . Couldn't have happened to a better program or more importantly better people. Congratulations to the premier A program in the state.

On a related note. It will be interesting to see how Bago reloads and responds to the challenge before them.

As I said very early in the season, Decatur St. Teresa is the team of the future. Very young team who nearly pulled off the state championship. With the excellent coaching they have in Todd Vohland they are the clear favorite next year and for that matter the next two years imo. They have some excellent junior high girls coming in to go along with the young team they now have. Should be fun to watch.
