Default Track's Honor Roll Question

I know it goes against the purpose of the Honor Roll but is it a common practice by coaches to not nominate athletes to make the honor roll because the coach wants the athlete to not be well known by the competition. The reason, I am asking because I know of a case where a runner put up a qualifying time in their first meet. (The individual also had two other relays splits would have easily made been a qualifying time to if it was in an open event.) The individual won't be nominated to the Honor Roll because the coach wants to hide the individual's stats from the competition. I was just wondering if this was common.
