Question on Officiating at States
Hey I have a question regarding an incident today at the Group 3 Boys 4x800...
I was rounding the final turn in about 3rd/4th place(Montgomery) in the seeded section of the 4x800 for group 3 as the 2nd leg, and idk if lambert or anyone else noticed but either a Ridge or Kingsway runner swung wide around me and inadvertantly elbowed the baton 20 feet behind me causing me to lose about 5 places on our relay and leading us to not place unfortunately...
my question was how do the officials determine if the elbow was malicious or indicental and how they decide if a DQ is in order for either side???
Note: there was an official right there when it happened and the coaches in the area seemed to believe that a DQ was in order...

Its a judgment call.
But, shouldn't the baton be in your left hand, away from passing runners on your outside?

you make a valid point...
but i was putting it into my right hand for the handoff which i thought was the right way to do it, right hand to the receivers left hand although i could be wrong

don't put out any names when you dont know for sure. it wasnt a ridge runner becuase the ridge guy passed you after you had dropped it.

if it's inadvertant, then there's no foul, no DQ.

I was always taught hand off left to right and reciever immediately puts into left. Receiver's back to the inside of track and as they lead out the incoming runner they tend to drift inside v. drift outside if taking with their left.
Plus, if in the left hand while running it is away from runners passing on the outside and if you are passing runners, you have control of whether it will hit a runner on your inside.

We always carried right and passed off to left. I don't think I could carry in my left but it has been a little while since I ran a relay.

the right way to use batons is your supposed to be facing the inside of the track and you grab the baton with your left hand and then switch it and hold it with your right hand...then when passing off you pass with your right hand into the next leg's left hand....atleast this is what almost every runner i see does and out of all my coaches this is what i was taught
